    Adding a bigger gas tank

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hey guys,

I was just wondering if anyone here had added a bigger gas tank to the S4, or even added a aux fuel cell to the vehicle for more range. I'm frequently traveling between Wyoming and Colorado and if any of you guys have driven across Wyoming, there are not a lot of gas stations to fuel up at.

In my B7 A4, I could make it from my home in Denver to my home in Sheridan easily on one tank of gas. Only times I'd have to stop were if I were hungry or thirsty. In the S4, being that the gas stations are a little scarce, I always try and fill up when I get just below the 1/4 tank mark. I could make it with 1 fuel up, but with snow no the ground, I try to be cautious and fill up twice.

Some of the guys on the M3 forums have added aux fuel tanks for the longer trips and road rallies, which allows the the range when they need, but also they can remove the tank when they need the truck space.

Have any of you guys thought about doing this/have done this?

i would try to map out gas stations along your route based on 50 miles less than what a full tank will carry you

I can't imagine that helps as much as it looks since fuel is so heavy and will compromise efficiency

Definitely better to be in front of the rear axle if you were to add an additional 4-500lbs of gas can/fuel.

anything could be done with deep enough pockets, I would guess your cheapest route would be to find a local racing shop because chances are they have experience with installing fuel cells.

I would also guess that your cabin would begin to assume a bit of a gasoline smell after a while as those hoses and fittings will not last forever.

at the same token, could you not just carry a few extra jerry cans? seems like it would be cheap and very effective

You are suppose to take a rest break every couple hrs. Normal highway driving that is 5 hrs. Does the S4 still notify you to 'take a rest' after xx time? It did in my B5 S4.
During that time, you can stop for food, and put gas in your car.

Do you have nav? One of my favorite features of the nav on road trips is that it continuously displays the distance to upcoming gas stations along my route, including the brand of the gas station. That way I can keep an eye on miles to empty and time my fill ups accordingly. If no nav, than I would follow the above suggestion and map out the gas stations ahead of time, based on your typical range.

I'd think a couple extra 5 gallon cans would be sufficient. If sealed properly and strapped down they wont smell or spill.

IMO not worth sacrificing the trunk space for an extra fuel tank when there are quite a few other simple alternatives as already mentioned in this thread.

id be afraid of getting hit from behind. The factory fuel tank is in a good spot and more protected than a big ass tank in the trunk.

Plenty of gas stations to stop at between Denver and Sheridan. No need to carry extra gas, but if you want to, a few jerry cans will do it. I couldn't make it from Denver to Sheridan with my old 1.8T Audi without stopping, I'm surprised you were able to.

I guess not a lot of you guys are driving a lot of miles, or you guys actually stop every few hours like it's recommended. It was just an idea.

Doc, the gas light would just turn on as I was pulling into Sheridan. It was perfect and that was cruising at 80mph.

Rudy, yes the car will update you every 2 hours telling you to take a break.

also atleast with the b8.5's when your low fuel light comes on the nav will pop up with would you like to find a gas station. My B7 didn't do that. Kinda a somewhat neat feature.

Just seems to risky to me. Also you would have to figure out how to get the fuel from the trunk into the main fuel tank? I know there is an access to under the seat. But just seems like to much work for what its worth. Unless there was a rally event where there was money involved lol

No joke, fuel tanks and cells are built to resist damage and leaking in collisions, but they are also put well out of the way of any normal impacts.....and outside the passenger area.

A factory height F250 hitting the back of that thing at speed would cause a rupture for sure. whether a fire started or not, who knows.....but yeah....I would map gas stations or carry a 5 gallon emergency can only before strapping a 20 gallon cell into my trunk.

The range of the S4 is plenty long and there are plenty of gas stations directly along the route. I don't see why this is even a consideration, really.

Small fuel tanks in my b5s4 and especially my 05 a8 w12 hVe always gotten on my nerves. My w12 gets 220 To 260 to a tank and it does not take much fuel once you can hear the fuel pumps running when it gets low. 14 to 15 gal is about all it will take. What the hell. It is a 6.0 w12 you cant fit something in the low 20 gal range in there

Seriously tho, when the low gas light comes on I believe there is still 2.5 gallons left, so you should be able to go over 50 miles easily on the highway. That light is awfully scary tho ;)

Exactly how many gallons of fuel do you think he's trying to add? Gasoline is ~6lb per gallon. You think he's adding 60-80 gallons?

Personally, I wouldn't want that much fuel/weight in the rear of my car. As mentioned earlier, it takes fuel to carry fuel, plus, that much weight in the rear has got to impact the steering and ride quality. If you need a few more miles range I'd go with a Jerry can. Again though, I'd prefer not to carry any fuel in the boot and simply stop and top off when needed. Just me...

The best part now is the speed limit is 80mph, so cruising speeds have gone up.

The other thought process was either this summer or next summer, my brother and I are going to do a road trip to Alaska. I'm thinking maybe for that trip I'll get a cargo basket and strap some cans to the roof.

Either that, or I'm seriously thinking about adding a fuel cell like this.

It's skinny enough that I think you could butt it up on the right or the left side of the trunk and still have plenty of room for gear and everything else. The other side of the trunk would be loaded up to balance it al out. I'll keep you guys posted on what I end up doing.

Scumbucket, I'll have to look into the sizes of the tanks and dimensions.
