Loud engine noise and low oil pressure

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Started it this morning and she sounded like a diesel truck. Sounded better after 20 seconds. Pulled out of driveway and red low oil pressure light came on.
Having it towed to shop now.

    Thoughts?

Car has 112k miles. Recent tbelt and water pump change. Recent cam tensioner change, new rear coolant flange.
Car always had synthetic oil changes every 5k miles.

Shop called and said zero oil pressure.
Oil pump or possible pickup tube.

i was going to say that your oil is low, but your mechanic beat me. When you have Low oil pressure, it can mean 4 things, 1) Oil leak somewhere, 2) Low oil in tank, 3) Too much oil in tank or 4) Bad sensor.

...or clogged pickup, or broken oil pump drive chain, or damaged oil pump...

    Huh?

Low oil pressure means low oil pressure. simple as that.

Likeliest culprit is a clogged oil pickup, worn out oil pump, broken oil pump chain or guide.

let me correct myself, what i said were the most common thing that you should check right away, and that not only goes for cars but for any other system to run with oil. Obviously those things you guys mentioned can happen but it is not as common as what i said.

Do our cars have a history of oil pump failure? I was not aware of this.

So they will drop the oil pan tomorrow and see what failed.
If the car was on for 60 seconds, 30 seconds to warm and 30 seconds of driving at low rpm, what would the engine damage be if any?

If they replace a failed part like the pickup tube or oil pump, would the engine run normal after something like this?

Most likely yes, but you are going to want to pull the fifth main cap on the crank to double check that there is no damage.

Now I say the fifth main cap because that is the one that will always receive the most damage in a loss of oil pressure. Pressure is distrubuted from the front to the back, so this bearing will tell you how bad the damage is on the other bearings without requiring removal. If the car was on for 60 seconds its probably not a huge deal. There is a very good chance you can get away with just fixing the issue.

ehhh not likely....I mean it can totally depend, if you had some kind of failure then you might have metal bits all up in your pump and oil, which would damage all bearing surfaces, but if your pickup is just clogged then there is a good chance that your entire engine is fine and just needs to be unplugged. One of the failures that I've seen that seems to be more common on VW is the oil pump chain seizing up, or snapping. If htat is the case, then your engine is probably totally fine, just a new chain, but if your balance shafts are seized up that could be trouble.

    Update:
Car sat in shop overnight. Started right up with no issues. Tech stated oil pressure was normal, conclusion is condensation caused freezing in oil pan, therefore pickup tube was blocked. They will drop the pan and replace pickup tube with updated unit. And make sure nothing else got damaged or failed.

How many use a block heater or oil pan heater?
Audi does not sell a external heater, yet the dealer said he has seen a few of these issues every winter.

VC = valve cover. its part of the PCV system. It has internal baffles inside. If its bad it will allow some condensation into the engine. The baffled area is fused together with some adhesive only

I didnt notice where you was from until I looked at the Avitar. Ive seen oil dipstick heaters that work pretty well in climates like you live. Its so easy to use. You replace your dipstick temporary wen in use. And with your original when the warm weather comes back in

you made the right choice by not driving the car. unfortunately I didn't know any better and drove the car home from the airport when my low oil pressure light came on. now i'll be swapping in a 2.7 because the 2.0 is shot! my oil looked like it had glitter in it :/

I'm running a heating pad on mine up in way north minnesota. Really helps the engine run smoother in the cold mornings. I attempted a block heater but our coolant system is a bitch to tap into without custom formed hoses.

Mine has done this twice now over the last few days, no low oil pressure light though, but considerably louder at initial start up. It has been pretty damn cold here though, only seems to do it after the first start in the cold though. Friday I drove 2 miles, parked, then when I started again it did not do it. Hoping its just cold and will stop once the weather warms up.
