the 97-00 1.8T A4's (AEB, ATW) use the 058 block. The 01-05 1.8T A4's (AWM, AMB) use the 06A block, which is significantly different (has an internal water pump, among other differences -- I'd have to google for all them) and not interchangeable. If LKQ is telling you that an ATW short block/engine will work (without
significant additional effort), then they are incorrect.
However, to complicate things, the head from the ATW is interchangeable/usable, since it is a small port (unlike the AEB), just like the AWM and AMB. That may be where the confusion is coming from.
