    Hi guys,

My brake light is currently one and when I did my 15,000 mile service it was recommended that I replace both Padua d rotors. Is this normal for our cars? I live in NYC so I do alotnof stop and go traffic. And I was given a quote of approximately $1300

Wow. I just got my 15k service and I still have 8mm left in my pads. Even my tires have 7/32 left. Maybe I'm not driving it hard enough.

I did my 30,000 mile service and my front pads are at 4mm. 2mm is when they need to be replaced, I was told. My dealer quoted me $800 for both front brake pads and rotors.

My understanding is that rotors don't really need to be replaced unless they're bent or cracked, etc. When my brake light comes on, I plan to have the pads replaced and just have rotors serviced at an independent shop.

Wow, that is pretty early. If your pads are at the limit & your rotor thickness is still good, do you still have to change both pads and rotors?

When I asked I was told that they usually suggest replacing the rotors when they have a lip. I just think its a little premature to have to replace rotors, but i'm not a mechanic.

Lots of traffic will speed up the wear thats for sure..Unless the sensor is faulty, ya gotta get them done..I will have to defer to other meme\bers as far as cost, as I haven't had the experience..My car has 75000 miles and is on its second set and I do rotors and pads each time.

I know booomiz went through his first pair in less than 15k - thought he must be doing incredibly dumb things to cause that type of wear.

I'd replace both pads and rotors. Not one or the other.
800 is WAY too much for front pads and rotors also. You can get OE replacements much cheaper.
Just have a look at them yourself. If you are down to 2mm or less of pad you need em replaced. Turn the wheel out and use a flashlight and you will be able to see the condition of the brakes very easily.

I will sell you a brand new set of rotors (oem) and akibono ceramic pads for $450, find a shop and they will charge you probably 1.5hr labor (about 150-160) so 600 bucks there you go!

I paid 400 for my rear brakes (rotors and pads) and an oil change. The dealer is ripping you off.

your brake light is on? or the brake pad wear indicator came on? Big difference between the 2.

and no, this is NOT normal. and you didn't specify, front or rear or both? Fronts should last way longer than that. Rears *maybe* but still should go somewhere in the 20xxx to 30xxx mile range.

I just replaced brakes and rotors on all 4 corners of mine at 65k. My pad wear indicator light still had not come on. That said, I do primarily highway driving. Dealership tried to tell me to replace with 4mm left on my pads at 55k. Told them no thanks and went another 10k and upgraded to the ECS 2-piece rotors and Hawk 5.0 pads along with a fluid flush and SS lines. Very happy with that choice.

The Brake pad wear indicator come on. And during my 15000 mile service they mentioned my front brake pads were 5mm. I Don't think I drive particularly hard.
