Does my B8 have AFS or non-AFS headlights?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Thinking about buying headlights on ECS without the amber sidemarkers but noticed they had AFS and non-AFS versions. How do I tell if mine comes with AFS? All I notice is that when I start the car, the headlight beam goes up and down. Car is a 2010 premium plus with nav.

When I turn my lights on, they go down, in (cross-eyed), out (Marty Feldman), and then back up. Also, you have to be moving for them to point left/right with the wheel. Just crank the steering wheel left/right while you are moving and you'll see the lights also go left/right if you have the adaptive lights.

Somehow, I don't think they were available in the US in 2010, but I could be wrong.

    My 2010 has them...

At least, they do the dip and go cross-eyed and Marty Feldman when I turn the car on...

To quote myself: "I don't think they were available in the US in 2010". Canadian Premium trim cars have had them since day one and I think they are now standard in the US as well.

My mistake. I read US as North American market. Didn't know there was a difference. Thanks!

You're describing the self-leveling feature of the headlights. If your headlights actively move side to side to point in the direction that you're turning, you have AFS. If they remain fixed, you don't. I don't know if this is/was available as an option on non-Prestige trim cars.

Adaptive headlights(AFS) are only available on Prestige model cars. Your Prem+ could not have them from the factory

Good to know then, thanks guys! Saves me a few hundred getting new headlights without the amber sidemarkers.

But has anyone bought ecodes or ones with with clear sidemarkers from ECS without the AFS option? Do they still have auto-leveling?

I don't think mine go crosseyed, but they definitely go Marty. When I turn the wheel at night, I can see only the inside light re-aim, the outside light stays where it is...is that normal for the 2012's?

AFAIK, all HID headlights must have auto leveling by law. They really don't want them shining up into oncoming traffic.

I may be mistaken with both cross-eyed and Marty movements, it may be Marty only. I don't really take notice of it that much any more.

On my 2011, both headlights definitely move together when the wheel is turned so not sure if that has changed for newer versions.

Canada was able to get AFS from day one. Not sure if it was on all packages though.

Here in the US, they were NOT available on 2010 and 2011 cars, no matter the package. In 2012 they came back on Prestige cars, and possibly as an a la cart item on P+ cars as well (not sure on the last bit though).

If you have a '10 or '11, you do NOT have them if your car is a US market car, and is otherwise unmodified.

So I have a 2012 prestige.... That means I have AFS?? I've never noticed that they follow my turns... Is it really noticeable?

You should, as far as I know. The easiest way to tell is if the lights cycle through "cross-eyed" as well as up-down when you turn them on.

You can also pull the part number off the top of the headlight and search for it if you aren't positive. Little white label on top of the housing.

    For example:

Our 07 A4 Avant has them. It's obvious when you start the car, because the lights test movement in all 4 directions

I have a 12 prestige and i never noticed mine going sideways. they just do the normal adjusting when car goes on and when I go over dippy roads I can see them bouncing to stay adjusted.

It's pretty obvious yes ! Just go on a darker road at night and take a turn, you'll see immediately

I only noticed it if I'm looking for it. I think it's easier to see them return to center, after a turn, than see them adjust into your turn. Just my opinion, though.

I sure hope they improved the AFS since my 2008 A6. I HATED them on that car. The mechanism started to wear over time, causing the headlight to vibrate over bumps. It looked like a goddamn strobe light on license plates of cars in front of me and road signs.

We are talking about B S4s on this forum. What non B8 S4s Audis have is not pertinent to the OP's question about B8 S4s which was originally posted almost 4 yrs ago.
