    Spark plug socket check

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi

Relatively new owner and actually have a SEAT, but it's the B7/A4 2.0T platform car, so was hoping for some quick help on a noddy question.

Was going to mess around with the spark plugs etc soon. Could I please just check on the following(before I get to the point of having the coil packs off and realise I have the wrong socket!!), are either of the following the right spark plug socket:

    Sealey AK654
    or
    Sealey S38SP10

Also - which do people recommend - magnetic sockets or rubber socket inserts?

    Thanks!!

OP, the hex size for out spark plugs is 16mm so either of those sockets will work. I would lean towards the magnetic one as that will make extracting the plug easier.

Ive never used a magnetic spark plug socket. Have never even seen one, but Id be interested to try it out. The rubber has always worked well for me and its easy to remove if you need to.

    Thank you for the replies.

Alucard - I did read http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...te-for-B7-A4-s and http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...ent-Guide-v2-0 which were excellent. I just had a moment of doubt when I was looking for a socket and found this page http://www.screwfix.com/p/laser-spar...ket-10mm/46404 where a review talks about confusion between 10mm, 14mm and 16mm. Therefore I thought I would err on the side of caution and double check the specific sealey ones I highlighted are the right ones.

I like the sound of the magnetic one, but have seen one review of a 'heavier' user have the magnet fall out, which would be quite a pain. Not sure which is worse, that or the rubber potentially not gripping the plug properly!

And what a great forum, 9 replies in just a few hours!

The answer is that it depends on the plug. I prefer magnetic but find that with certain plugs they don't work, so I have one with a rubber insert as backup. Get yourself a 12" extension too. Much better than piecing together a bunch of smaller ones that can come apart while you're working. ;)

So just to clarify, both the sockets in op's post would work?

I didn't even know about magnetic. I had the rubber insert come off on one of the back 4 plugs on my dodge ram (PITA) plugs, and had to remove all 4 to find it. The next one I buy will be magnetic for sure (as long is it actually is strong enough to hold the plug).

Ok, I've gone with magnetic and will try to pick up a cheapo rubber one as a back up. I got a 200mm extension as that's all the shop in question sold (I have another 75mm which I can attach if I need, directly attaching the 200mm to the spark plug) - thanks for the reminder on that!
