06 A3 How many seals/gaskets on oil filter?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
My mechanic was confused. The Mobil 1 Extended Oil filter came with 2 seals/gaskets? One is flat like a rubber band and the other is rounder. His service manual TIS diagram only showed 1 seal goes on the oil filter housing cap and he couldnt make it work with the 2 seals that came with the oil filter. He ended up using the just the flat one on the oil cap. Is this correct?

Yes, just one seal, the flat one that seats into the groove at the top of the threads in the filter canister.

The MANN filters we sell only come with one oring.

I am not sure why that diagram is showing two.

Here is a link if you want to see it: MANN Oil Filter - 2.0T FSI

Here is an image to see what comes with it. I am not sure why the Mobil 1 filter would come with an additional one.

Let me know if you have any questions,
    Phil

That is the diagram straight from the Audi dealership website. Ive called two dealerships and they both have told me that it uses two O-rings.

The oil filter housing for the cartridge was installed with one oring (the one in your picture) however my car is leaking oil from that spot.

    Is Audi diagram incorrect?

I physically looked at a housing and filter and just dont know where that other oring would go.

I know in some of the V8s there is a oring that sits on the top housing but not on the 2.0Ts

Did your mechanic torque the filter canister to spec or just do it by feel? I've done close to 20 oil changes on this engine in my own car at this point, always used the flat O-ring like in Phil's pic. The only time it ever leaked is the one time I had it done at the dealer. Re-torqued it myself and the leak stopped. My thought is the plastic filter canister can easily warp if over tightened.

P.S. I normally use the Mann/OEM filter which only comes with one O-ring, but it is possible that Mobil may package theirs with two so it can be used on multiple applications.
