    2.7t Timing Belt Change Question

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So I am in the middle of swapping the belt on my 2.7. I lined up the mark on the crank pulley with the arrow on the plastic cover and went on removing all the pieces. Once I got the belt off I attempted to install the cam pulley alignment tool and no go. The pins are opposite of the brackets, this freaked me out and I re-installed the crank pulley and cover and yes they are aligned. Is there something I am missing here? I marked the cam sprockets with a perfectly level line across the face and onto the belt cover, so they have not moved.

What is wrong here and what can I do about it now?

Yep as stated above rotate the crank 1 full rotation and align the marks again and the cam holes will be good. But since you already removed the belt (big no no since you didn't check proper tool fit)

You can not rotate the cams without the crank rotating at the same time. Due to the engine being an interface engine

So basically you need to reinstall the timing belt to rotate the crank 1 full rotation so everything rotates together

put the belt back on and turn the engine over 1 full revolution make sure that you pulleys are straight and your crank was on the mark.

    here is what i do
-pull upper covers so cam gears are exposed
-turn crank till i can get the cam bar in
    -remove dampner and covers
-put cam bar in and brake the cam bolts loose and only turn them max of 2 turns out
-pull cam gears-basically they are a pressure fit cone on a cone - this allows the cam gear to spin but cams dont - (some times the pass dea cams snap backwaards - dont worry you didnt bend valves
-replace your stuff - replace everything you want to at this point . when its all installed install the belt. you can install the lower cover and balancer if you want to make sure it lines up - cant remember if you can pull the tensioner pin when the lower cover is on
-now put the cam bar in - with the bar in and lower damper at the correct spot pull the tensioner pin
-what i like to do is pretension the belt - opposite of compressing the tensioner
-then with cam bar still in i move the crank back and forth maybe 10deg or so past the line up marks both ways to get the slack out of the belt
    - then turn crank counterclock wise 10 deg back from the marks and then turn clockwise to line up the marks - puts tension on the correct side of the belt
-tighten the cam gears down and turn over 2 full revolutions of the crank and line back up
-throw the cam bar back in and you should be good to go

Thanks everyone, I marked the block then re-installed the timing belt, reset the tensioner and turned 180. Now all the marks line up on the cams and the crank!
