Will it fit - LS3 content

I am getting close to buttoning up my current build and have been looking for the next project. Martin already stole the I5 idea, and the VR6 is not really shining in my mind like it used to. The 2.7tt is an older platform and done already, so I was not looking that way either. This leaves 8 cylinder engines as the next place to look. As I started looking at them, I noticed that the Corvette engines are readily available, have a lot of aftermarket parts, and not that expensive. So I am starting to get the twitch to get a crate LS3 engine, tear it down, replace the rods/pistons/valves, and then stuffing a turbo on it, and stuffing it into the A4.

Still a very preliminary thought, but these look like pretty nice engines. Is there any way to mate a totally different engine to quatro, or is that just a dream and I would have to look at getting a Corvette transmission and make it RWD? If that was the case, I would just stick to a 4.2L Audi engine for the project.

    The engine

I sell Chevys and have owned multiple LS engines and fully support this idea if it's sensibly possible. You would certainly have to mate it up to the proper transmission but I would also consider looking at an LS1 or LS2 engine versus the LS3. My preference overall would definitely be the LS1... either buy one new or find a gently used out of an older vette, gto or ss camaro. The reason I preferred the LS1 was because they were cable driven throttle bodys versus this drive by wire bullshit. I put down 650rwhp with my current LS1 without any boost. Drop that into a b7 somehow? And it'd be amazing.

That what is catching my eye. These engines seem to be more than capable of high hp and not super expensive for what you get.

The ls engines are pretty small for a v8 so I am sure it could physically fit and probably easier than the 4.2 As for the Transmission you would need to make some type of adapter bracket to fit the stock Trans.

An LS1 could be had for a great price as well as a mated tranny out of the donor car. Save you some coin towards install costs and modding. I don't think boosting is a necessary expense tho. Going with an agressive cam set up, swapping out the heads to some 243 heads out of an LS2 or even an Escalade, longtube headers and a solid tune? Easily will net you close to 500 or so hp. Then there's the option of running meth, etc... options are endless for an LS swap and the motors are near bullet proof and simple to work on. Benefits of a single cam

Here's some motivation for you, sir. This little beauty came into my showroom yesterday. The new Corvette Z06 is INSANE. Even tho they badge it as an LT4 now and not an LS, trust me, Chevy knows how to build motors right. All while still using single cam, pushrod V8s just like back in the 60s. Versus Ford who tries to keep up by using 4 cams in the bullshit rustangs. I really would loveee to see you do this and perhaps see your B7 on slicks haha

You honestly don't need to do much to a stock LS engine to handle gobs of power. You can pickup an LS engine out of a tahoe (even if it is a 5.3l) for $500 or less, throw LS1 heads and intake manifold on it, boost it, and be making enough power to run 10s for dirt cheap.

If you want to keep it in the Audi family, buy a 2001 A6 4.2l with a blown transmission for $1k as a donor car and stuff the engine and everything right in the A4 then boost that. 034s STK will bolt up to the stock 4.2 manifolds from the A6.

Warning: Do not wander into the American V8 performance market. You will never want to come back.

I agree. Find one out of a 2001 or 2002 SS Camaro, I believe some Z28s also carried LS1s in them for those years. Or a C5 corvette or a 2004 GTO. You'll for sure be able to find something with under 20k miles for a great price with the matching tranny.

Yeah the face lift z28s had a slightly de-tuned ls1 compared to the SS.

Yes. It is an original 1972 that my dad bought new. It has been sitting at my other house for a few years, and I can't decide if I want to go original or update. The damn side draft carbs have not worked correctly for many years, so I am leaning towards a 2GZ swap. It is in pretty good shape, but definitely needs a good going through.

I do have some pics, but I have no idea where they are. I am going over there later to check on some stuff, so I may pop open the garage and snap a few for you :)

Here is the thing about the JZGTE engines, they are cheap! For example, a 10 second search turns up a swap in (close to everything you need) for $1650

As much as I hate to admit it, the LS engines are some of the top drag strip performers I've ever seen. You manage to put it in an audi AND utilize Quattro with LSD and rear bias (JHM stuff ;)) ,you'll have a 8 sec car if you want to.

This Trailblazer SS with 88mm turbo does a 9 sec, and whatever Camaro it raced blew him out of the water.

But, IMO, if you can't have Quattro, it's not worth doing.

You have a good point, but I have no idea about how to mate the quattro and LS3 systems. This may eventually push me away from this lovely plan and into a 4.2 or a W8.

All of the 4 gen F-bodies ('98-'02) with a V8 had an LS1. The GTO and C5 vette had them also. Anything newer than '04 was an LS2 (aside from the Z06 vette, which had an LS6).

Keep it in the family man. KEEP IT IN THE FAMILY! (I desperately want to see what a JZ swapped 240 will do)

Speaking of turbo 240s, I wonder if anyone has ever put a Volvo T5 into a Datsun?

I meant size wise lol obviously the 4.2 would be a easier swap. But like my Z the twin turbo engine has far less room to do anything to than those that swapped to a ls motor it's pretty sad.

I6 isn't gonna fit with Quattro, any of those huge displacement v8's will be a tighter fit than the 4.2, you'll struggle to turbo it unless you remote mount. 2.7 is bluh, vr6 is nice, but really....i5 is what's up! Join me on the dark side
