Any tools / precautions / tips for getting to it?

How can you tell if it needs replacement vs. cleaning?

    Thanks

It's located at the back of the intake manifold with a hose going to the valve cover. Not to hard to get to but there are single use hose clamps in the way. Once you have it off I used a couple of screwdrivers to gently pry looses the catches and work my way around untl the two pieces came apart. I did mine around 45k. There was a little dirt in there.but nothing too bad. Check out jhms intake spacer install video on you tube.

Remove it while the car is still warm but obviously not hot. Having the car warm means the hoses will be softer and more pliable which will make wiggling them off easier. Pick a couple new hose clamps from a hardware store since the single use clamps were pretty messed up looking after I pulled mine off. Pretty straight forward otherwise, good lighting is never a bad idea either.

Sorry it didn't work out. I'm pretty sure Audi does not recommend cracking it open to clean and reuse, as they want you to buy a new part no matter what. I have seen others round the blogs manage it tho so I'm not the only one. Conversely there are probably as many untold stories breaking them.
Seems like if it was that brittle/gummed it needed replacement anyways.

Could be excessive blow-by (poorly working PCV, or other issues like rings, possibly worn valve guides allowing gases to escape through the stem seals which is unlikely, but another possiblilty ) unless its colder out then occasionally the oil/water vapors condense and turns into a milky residue until its pulled through and burned (Not too common)
