Adding Bluetooth audio(preferred) or aux in to 2G MMI in 05 A6 C6

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hey Guys,

I have a 2005 Audi A6 with bluetooth for the phone but not audio streaming.

I have been doing some research to see what options are out there to add bluetooth streaming, or an aux in if bluetooth streaming doesn't work well.

    I'm looking for something:
    - to be able to play Pandora over the Bose sound system with good sound quality
    - not outrageously expensive (under $100),
    - and easy/quick to install (I don't want to splice into factory wiring)

Does anyone have any new suggestions? I would be willing to delete the CD changer to get bluetooth or aux but wondering if anyone had suggestions of brands or methods.

    Thanks,
    Jake

I have heavily reserarched this. You have 2 options.
    - FISCON bluetooth system
    - AMI with ipod cable and TUNE2AIR module.

Fiscon integrates with what you have in your MOST loop currently, and is a module that you are adding. It's around $450 http://www.fiscon-mobile.eu/products/pro_mmi_lwl.php

AMI is audi's solution and new was outrageously expensive. Good news though, becuase you can pull one from an a6 or a8 with mmi 2g. The part number is 4E0 035 785 X (X is any revision number). This website helps a lot. http://a6retrofit.com/ami-retrofit-a...sic-interface/

The ipod cable can be fitted with this http://www.amazon.com/ViseeO-Tune2ai.../dp/B00B52LLJ6, which will allow A2DP streaming. Hope this helped.

So to me, the Dension options seems a bit to pricy at $400+. The AMI looks to be cheaper and more factory looking if I am correct.

Please let me know if I am reading this correctly:
If I do the AMI option, the AMI is basically a box that take place of the CD changer from the wiring to the physical location of the CD changer, correct? By installing the AMI box, this allows me to directly plug in an ipod of some sort. But I would need the "Tune2air" box that basically plugs into the ipod connection and make it bluetooth capable, allowing it to work with my android device? and by using AMI, if I had an actual Ipod, would I be able to control it through the Factory MMI?

The A6 Retrofit website was very helpful but just want to make sure I understand what i am getting myself into.

Yea, that's pretty spot on. The only advice I would give is that you don't need to remove the whole glove box. There is a panel twords the back of the passenger foot well to get to the cabin filters, and you can access the MOST connector and the power line from there. Also buy the changer removal tools, I really mangaled my changer getting it out of there.

AMI is the route I took as well, can't go wrong with factory! Make sure you get the correct AMI, there is one that will only fit the a4 and a3, they are way cheaper but use a different data transmission method and won't work on our cars.

I came across this as well, looks like it does the same thing as tune2air, just cheaper.

Any idea which AMI will work on our A6's? I've been looking on amazon. Should I be shopping somewhere else?

4E0 035 785 X is the part number you need (where X is the revision letter), you are going to have the best luck on eBay. If you are patient, you should be able to snag one for ~$200. It needs to be the one with the MOST connection on the back (optical).

So this one would work. Although it is a bit expensive. And he/she didn't cover the connectors which are optical, so if dust gets in there it can ruin them.

No worries. It took me around 2 months to find one for the right price, lol. It's a good idea to set up an eBay search alert on keywords like AMI a6 or a8.

Sweet. Thank you guys for your responces.

When I was asking about the right AMI, I was actually refereing to the cord. I managed to pick one up on ebay (Just the metal thing, no plastic) for $185, which I though was decent.

I might buy both bluetooth options (tune2air and the little dongle) but want to make sure I get a good enough cord. would have to go through all this trouble just to have the cord be the issue. Anyone have good suggestions on cords?

I've never seen one without the housing, I hope you can find the cable that goes into the side of it, because it doesn't look like the standard AMI cable.

The X is just a variable standing in for the revision letter. Mine is an F. You need the tray enclosure though, as it has a cable adapter thing. The sliding part shouldn't matter though.

If you are on the most current version, then no. Try plugging a flash drive formatted in FAT32 into it, I think it's 'initializing' because it has no input.

I may not be on the most current version, haven't had much luck trying to update it.

I had the tune2air think plugged into my AMI and had my phone connected to it

Forget old school hard wire AMI and go wireless for streaming music from your iPhone

There is absolutely no need for a hard wire AMI connection. My 2011 A6 Avant Prestige has Bose Surround Sound. It has a radio. I plug my Gogroove FlexSmart X2 bluetooth receiver/FM transmitter into a 12v outlet (cigar lighter) link it via bluetooth to my iPhone 6Plus (which is also linked by bluetooth to the Audi MMI for phone conversations), locate an unused FM frequency to which the FlexSmart can transmit, and I can stream through the radio from my iPhone any online content I choose, e.g., internet radio, Pandora, Apple Radio, my iPhone music library etc. The sound is stunningly clear, as good as a hard wired connection. Why complicate the issue when you can buy my FlexSmart for $50 on Amazon, or pay more for a newer, but no better, version of the FlexSmart? Added bonus, the FlexSmart has a USB port that will enable one to charge the iPhone battery, and I can easily move it from one car to any of my others.

In the past I have had no luck with FM transmitters. They usually have crappy quality, and yoy can't control them from the Audi MMI.

I am still wondering what I should do to get the AMI working. Not sure if its a software thing or a hardware thing.

Going to try to update the software and see if that does anything.

I didn't believe it until I tried it. I took a chance on it after reading user reviews on Amazon. The reason I tried it was because my BMW dealer wanted hundreds of dollars to retrofit an AUX connection in my roadster. When I next took it in for service with the flexsmart booming tunes from my iPhone my service advisor was blown away. I can speak only of the gogroove flexsmart x2. A newer model, the x3, is available but I'm happy with my x2. Read the reviews on amazon. I think you'll be surprised at the quality of the sound. It's near enough to cd quality that you'll be hard pressed to detect any difference at all.

I have the Viseo TUNE2AIR in my 08 S6 and I love it. There is not a noticeable difference in the sound.

Hmm, interesting. I'll botton the software update for the MMI. I'm going to try and update that tomorrow, and if that doesn't fix the problem. I'll probably end up selling everything I have and going with the FM transmitter on Amazon. Thanks for your review on that!

    Hey Guys,

Just an update. I was able to get it working!! I ordered a Software update kit from ebay and it seems to have fixed the issue. Audio quality is great from the TUNE2AIR Module.

Thanks again for all your help!

Well, as you may remember, I bought two AMI units. I bought a cable on Amazon and that worked great with virsion F, but did not work with version B. Here is the link, it had mixed reviews on amazon but most people were having issues when using it on an A5 or Q7. Plus it was only 12 bucks.

    http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B004XAZNAU

    Fortunately, Version B came with a cord that workers perfect (4F0 051 510 E).

I ended up keeping version B since this one had the plastic housing. I currently have Version F for sale in the audizine classifieds including the brand new cable.

Cool, thanks. I'll have to check which revision I have, I think mine is later.

Yeah I bought two of them. I thought I got a good deal on the first one, then found an even better deal on the second one. So I am selling the one I didn't use.

Here is a chart I found, not sure how much I trust it though. FOund it on eBay:

You can check you revision this way (Figured it out while doing the software update). If you press and hold the "setup" and "return" buttons at the same time fro 3-5 seconds, you'll get a different menu. In that menu you can click "AMI" and it will tell you the part number with the version as the last letter.

    Hope this helps
