Yet another problem, radio on but no sound

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I have an 03 allroad which has really turned into more of a money pit that I thought it could.

Anyway I was driving along and all of a sudden the radio stopped playing. Still looks like it's on with telling me the songs and such. I'm guessing maybe the amp went? It's a Bose system. Is there a way to bypass the amp and have the radio work?

Well, you need amp to amplify signal for speakers. First check your fuses (obvious one), secondly look at the connector for amp. you might simply have to clean them. Thirdly, these amps are cheap in used condition.

I checked the "radio" fuse in the fuse box on the left side of the dash. Is there another one somewhere else?
I'll check the connection for the amp next.

    Hey Vista461,
I have a 2001 Audi Allroad that has had a similar problem TWICE.
From my internet searching I found people switching decks, amps, all sorts of crazy stuff. Don't do that yet.
Are you noticing any other electrical mishaps, like window problems, locks, dome lights? Some people found the problem to be a wearing of a cable (drivers door, inside the rubber boot) and once that was taped or repaired (replacing the drivers side wiring harness, which is over $100 IIRC)

Now here is the real test of patience, hey you already got the car! In both cases, my issue resolved itself. You might try disconnecting the battery and touching ground to flash reset the computers, just make sure you have the audio code unlock from the previous owners manual or Audi ($).

Changing fuses never helped, it didn't visibly blow them. After a few days of driving the car the audio just suddenly returned. Once it took over a week. I bought a bluetooth speaker because I went for a road trip - but before I even hit the border the symphony blew my head off.
Stupid I know, but give it some time, use the time to ponder deep thought.

I had an issue very similar on a 97 avant and again on my 2000 a6... The 97 was the solder joint from the amp connector to the circuit board. I removed the amp box and resoldered the pins and it was perfect. The 2000 it was a very corroded amp circuit board. These cars are almost famous for water leaking into the amplifier box and ruining the amp. ( sedans but the allroad may be similar ) Something to note thou is that unless you have a bose system the front speakers are run off the head unit meaning that even if the amp is bad the front speakers should play... If you have no sound id suspect a wiring issue. ( read ground to short somewhere ) if the radio has ever been out it is very possible and likely that a wire could have been pinched between the frame of the radio and the chassis or chafed and is making contact to metal.

I do have the Bose. Haven't had a chance to dig into it again yet. But I appreciate the suggestions.

If you do end up taking apart the drivers door panel, take a quick look up and down that wiring harness for any spots it has rubbed through. Some electrical tape might fix the ground.

I ended up getting another amp.

    It didn't work.

I haven't had the door panel off but I did look at the wires going from the a-pillar to the driver door and they look ok.

Any other things to do or check?

Anyone have anything new to suggest on this?
2004 A6 allroad 2.7T, Bose system, radio (seemingly) doing everything it should, but no sound anywhere.
Replaced right rear trunk amp with an ebay donor supposedly tested working, still nothing.
    Help...

I had a similar issue. I pulled the fuse from the panel by the door and reinserted it and it worked work again. My problem was a faulty radio. I replaced it and have not had it happen again.

    PROBLEM SOLVED:

    - The radio head unit was running ... because mook prior owner ran his own a power jump cable direct to the fusebox, and spliced it it.

    - The REAL problem was under the driver's seat, where power cables to radio, amp, and speakers(?) are all joined together, and this connection had oxidized out with the connectors broken. Damp air? Kids kicking? Who knows? But once re-striped and connected back together, all worked fine!

Big shout out to Stefano at Autocraft, NYC W 46, who took the time to work on a car way below his usual stable, and to find and fix the problem. At least I know when I'm beat, go to a real expert!
