it's happened to me a few times but very rarely, yours is way more often. i usually just push it in again and then push out and it comes out. last time it happened to me i left my car sitting for a week and had to jumpstart it, so im guessing since the battery was almost dead it wasn't activating the key release or something? probably related to that.

the battery is an interesting take on it. i wonder. thanks.

it seems to happen a lot to me....and it never comes out the second time or any specific way. it's just me jerking it around until it comes out. i know, i know, save the laughter.

If I try to take it out immediately after turning off the car, it gets stuck so I wait like a second. I think there are some pins or something in the key hole assembly that lock it in.

Happens to me every once in a while. I feel like it is because i press on it too lightly. I just turn it back on the press it down with a little more power and it comes out.

If I remember correctly, there may be a TSB related to this. I think it has come up a few times over the past couple years on this forum.

Thanks for the feedback. I will certainly try to take more time before i pull it out and try to shut it off with more intent. What is a TSB by the way? I googled it and came up empty.

A TSB is a technical service bulletin. They are released by Audi for known issues and will describe an issue and the associated fixes for such issue. They are non-safety related so they don't put out a recall and will usually not do anything for them unless you specifically take your car in for a TSB related issue. Common examples of this for the 2010 A4 are control arms (vibration at highway speeds), power steering hose (vibration at slow speeds), sunroof wind deflector (noisy sunroof when open), etc... Not sure they will fix them for free once you are out of warranty.

Check your key the sides tend to get dirty on the fob itself, also try using the other key but once I had this happen and cleaned the bad key fob it never happened. One main thing to do is never just pull it out, when you turn the car off leave it in for a couple of seconds after the car is off then pull it out.

thank you all for the feedback. i am hoping that when i go to the car after work with this info in mind that i will no longer have this problem. patience might be the solution. i'll wait the couple of seconds.....before i start tearing at the dashboard.

I replaced my ignition switch a couple weeks ago. Mine was not releasing sometimes over the years, but it became more frequent so I just figured I'd replace it. Hasn't happened again since so I think the switch fixed it. The issue on mine was the little claws that are in the switch that clamp on the key were binding, so it wouldn't release the key with the switch turned off.

As said before this can happen if your battery is bad.

Hi Guys, I am suffering from this very same issue but now most of the time the key fob remains stuck in the dash and the head up display tells me that I should make sure I put the car into 'P' before I attempt to remove the key (or that the doors won't lock unless I am in 'P').
I am in Park 'P' already and I don't have ANY other keys on the fob at all.

Audi Q5 2010 2.0 Diesel SLine Special Edition

I have tried lots of different things like:
Leaving my foot on the Brake as I turn it off (press the fob in)
Taking my foot off the Brake when switching off
Switching off holing the fob in for 4/5 seconds (error still comes up in the head up display before I release the fob)
    Switching it off quickly
Used my 2nd Fob and same issue
Cleaned the sides of the Fob
Wiggling the Auto Gear Selector a little in every direction
Touching my nose while looking up to the stars and sticking my tong out to one side...
    Swearing & Not Swearing (honest!)

I have also noticed that some people may have solved this issue with the 'TSB' info on the erWin Audi website - So I registered with them and can't find them and all I get from the search feature is "This item is in work. No information is currently available. Thank you for your understanding."

Any help here would be GREAT as I have had this issue for 1 & 1/2 years now and it's getting me down

    Kind Regards,
    Dave

i dont have an automatic so bare with me please ..

when you put it in P is there an indicator on the dash it is in P .. ? or do you just have it mechanically in P .

I am wondering if there is some sort of microswitch that tells the car it is in P that is defective so it does not know that it is actually in P.

The J393 in the right rear serves several functions. BCM2 aka Comfort Control Module or Convenience Control Module is address 46 while the immobilizer is address 05.

On the shifter is a physical switch F305, park selector switch, which is integrated together with the N110 shift lock solenoid. This integrated device has a 4-pin plug. Pins 1 and 2 are the N110 solenoid; pins 3 and 4 are the F305 switch. Pin 3 goes to the J393, pin 4 goes to ground. So the J393 probably has 12v applied to pin 3, when the dual redundant microswitches are both closed, current will flow. I don' t know if the switches are open or closed when the shifter is in park.

My guess is your switches are flaky, or the seating of the shifter against the switches is flaky.

There is a gear display in the DIS, will say P, D, N, S, R. But I suspect that's from the TCM.

    TSB on the subject, SB-10043576-2564
37 Gear lever problems, ignition key cannot be removed or vehicle will not lock. Fault code 00230 may store in 05 module.
    37 12 38 2028472/1 February 22, 2012.
google search it to find the PDF on the NHSTA website.
Seems like you should have a DTC for the subject matter too, but guessing you don't have a scan tool.

It does say on the Head up display that it is is 'P' Park so "some" of the car at least knows it's in Park yeah.
(Gear Display in the DIS i think this means - Think this is what Smac770 had said below)

Can't thank you guys enough for even this much time and effort!

I will be taking my car back to my mate who is a mechanic with this information as he hasn't been able to sort the issue with his equipment (ooh errr Mrs) or with a friend of his who works for Audi.
I am sure this will help him get to the bottom of it.

Any more info you find would be great but already... Thanks a million Guys! :)

Any update on this thread? My Audi 2010 is experiencing this problem right now. I get the same reading on my display, the car wont lock, and to make things worst, the key fob is stuck in the ignition. Any help would be appreciated as I do not want to go to the dealership and pay them tons of money.

I haven't had chance to take the car to my mate (mechanic) yet as the Fob came out and has been fine for a few days (this will change and it will become stuck again before long!) as soon as it starts being an issue again I can book it in with him. No point if it's not sticking.

    More information...
@Cunnos - Does your fob pop out after a while (anything from 1 hour up to 5)?
You can release the Key part of the fob and lock the door with that but it doesn't set the alarm. < I don't recommend doing this though!
Make sure you block your car in and use an aftermarket steering wheel lock as the car will still start with whats left of the Fob in the Ignition :/

Once the Fob has popped out, I can Unlock the car with the buttons but not Lock the car with the buttons. (the car still thinks it's not in 'Park')

@Cunnos - If you do get somebody to look at your car with this information these helpful guys have replied with above... Can you update us on this thread please?
    Hope this helped a little
