RNS E 2012 updated bluetooth streaming

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
ok so there is so many fourms on the rns-e. so much information is out dated and confusing. there are different levels of mmi (multi media interface) 2g, 3g ect. not to mention so many different ways people have been connecting bluetooth devices to the rns-e. ive heard of problems related to the built in blue.. interfering with the after market bluetooth.

anyway to get to the point i just got a 2012 rns-e updated with 2014 maps. im not sure if it has bluetooth or not. or what level mmi it is.

all i know is i want the best possible way to get bluetooth working for my android phone happens to be a samsung note 2 at the moment probably a note 4 or whatever soon.

so i guess id like to know what people are running now?
    how is the streaming audio?
can you use all of your steering wheel and nav buttons to control the phone or music (steering wheel swap is also under way so i want full functionality)

i want it to work like it is oem

i also found a audi oem bluetooth adapter that has been discontinued if anyone knows how well that may work..
    thanks for ur help!

no OEM Bluetooth interface will allow A2DP streaming audio for the RNS-E (1st or 2nd gen), so you'll have to look at aftermarket units which connect thru the cd changer interface, like the Dension Gateway BT (pro or lite). Alternately, you can connect a simple Bluetooth gateway device to the (analog) AUX input port of the RNS-E, but you don't get steering wheel control that way (this is how I have mine set up).

the bluetooth adapter that audi had avalible for a short time was for streaming or so ive read in a bunch of fourms u had to get it at the dealer but the discontinued it for no reason. im not talking about the units built in bluetooth.

pertaining to after market bluetooth what would be the best unit for android base phone with full functionality?

it used to be that way, but new Seat Exeo rns-e and a3 with swapped a4 faceplates have ami functionality now. So if he got 2012 unit, he must have gotten the swapped faceplate one.
OP, just search for AMI for A3

the RNS-E doesn't have any bluetooth capability built-in, and I'd be curious where you saw mention of this AMI BT module, since I've never seen it.

I already gave you an aftermarket unit to check out. Enfig Car Stereo sells them and can steer you in the right direction. Android has nothing to do with it, Bluetooth is Bluetooth and if you phone and BT adapter support the same profiles (A2DP, AVRCP, etc) then everything will work just fine.

the 2010+ units do not have any hardware Bluetooth capability built-in; they have software support for BT telephony just like the 1st gen units, and require a separate BT hardware module for that capability.

it's not truly any level of MMI, since it's a sort of hybrid unit. It may work with some of the 2G MMI AMI interfaces, but that will likely be trial and error. The Kufatec Fiscon units are replacements for the OEM BT telephony module, and (last I checked) although they claim to have A2DP support, it's only via the mono TEL line between the BT module and the RNS-E, so it's really not a usable solution.

Matt is correct. I have had both the 1st gen (035 192x) and 2nd gen (035 193x) RNS-E units in my car. Still have the 2nd gen RNS-E unit in my car. It does have advanced MMI, but no built-in Bluetooth capability. For Bluetooth, you need to obtain a Bluetooth module with harness to plug in between your RNS-E adapter harness and the back of the RNS-E unit. With the 2nd gen, you can also get the newer AMI module that allows you direct connection to your iPod/USB device and stream music with full music control (including proper display of track info). The AMI module does not require the Bluetooth module in order to stream music.

There's a good thread in here of another owner who upgraded to the 2nd gen RNS-E and also added the AMI module. Worked perfectly. Mine does too.

AMI is your OEM answer. I use an old 160GB iPod for everyday use and occasionally use Pandora from my phone.

The AMI retrofit must be for a TT, A3 or R8. Those are the only ones that will work with the RNS-E.

I also did the updated RNSE/OEM Bluetooth/AMI setup in my car. When I installed the AMI in the glovebox, I found that you need the version of the glovebox that was made for cars outfitted with a glovebox CD changer (unless you want to do some hacking and leave out one of the brackets). If you're aiming for a full and proper install (using all of the OEM nuts and brackets), you also need to swap out the original metal bracket that secures the upper left back corner of the glovebox to the metal framing behind the dash with the bracket shown below.

Do you have a full write up and approximate cost of this add on?

I did not do a writeup. It is pretty simple, source a CD changer glovebox, source that bracket, then install is straight forward. I traded another AZ member my non-CD changer box for their CD-changer box , then found that bracket on flea bay for around $15. The old bracket is fastened to the dashboard framing with one nut, and the new bracket uses the same nut so there is nothing to it. I did take a picture showing the two brackets, the bracket on the bottom is the correct bracket for the CD changer box and the part number is shown on the ETKA image in the previous post.

i like that but i prefer the hands free deal. so i went another route i ordered a fiscon bluetooth device basically same get up goes between cars wire harness and the nav. with full use of controls in wheel and on unit. display im not sure about have not seen anything on that yet. heres a link to how this guy did it.

my biggest concern is getting the shop down the street to help me with the coding with the vagcom. im afraid im gonna miss a step and give my self a head ache..

Just to clarify, the 193x RNSE/OEM bluetooth module/AMI is 100% hands free, but for music apps, the phone/device stays connected to the AMI unit in the glovebox.

^^^ Also to clarify, Bluetooth is not required to run AMI with the 2nd gen RNS-E. You can add Bluetooth (OEM or aftermarket like Fiscon) and have it plug in between the adapter harness and the RNS-E. In fact, here's the order of connections in my car: OEM wires that would have plugged into my Symphony II radio -> RNS-E Adapter harness -> Bluetooth harness -> AMI harness -> RNS-E head unit. Everything is completely modular. I originally ran a Fiscon Bluetooth kit, then later switched to OEM.

Because people are wanting to use Bluetooth for hands free phone integration... not just for streaming audio.

i know its a euro model because instead of saying am/fm it just says radio. but can it really be a first gen if it has 2012 written on the back?

damn i hate that feeling i thought i got a newer gen so i guess mine will be a bit slower.

if i want a newer gen how can i tell by the serial #. since i guess the year doesnt matter.

is there a big difference from the 1st gen to the 3rd?

You can tell if the RNS-E is second gen by checking the part number: xxx 035 193 x

With the second gen unit, you gain a higher resolution screen, updated processor for faster route calculations, ability to use larger SD cards (1st gen could only use 2 GB SD cards max), and integration with real time traffic for automated re-routing (if possible). Also visually you get chrome knobs. You can get one with a matte black frame around the display (will not integrate to any OEM backup camera), or a gloss black frame. It also has an updated MMI to allow you to connect to the newer AMI (plug and play)

I just took delivery of my B7 S4 Avant last week and have been looking into RNS-Es. A lot has changed since I've had my B6 A4 when these things were pretty new. Did a lot of digging and reading and like OP i'm still a little confused. There's a ton of information online but most seems dated.

Looks like I'm in the market for a mk2 (2nd gen) RNS-E unit. I'd like to be able to connect the unit with my iPhone via BT for phone calls and stream/play music from my iPhone. It looks like in addition to a mkII RNS-E, I'll need a Audi AMI unit for the glove box and a tune2air so my iPhone doesn't have to be connected to the AMI? From what I've read, this would only allow me to play music from my iOS device and not be able to use it for phone calls? If that's the case, that's a pretty big investment for BT music streaming.

    RNS-E Mk22 ~$1,000
    Audi AMI interface $200-300
    Tune2Air $90

Am I missing anything else and what would the alternative be in order for me to be able to use BT for phone calls and music? Dension Gateway?

Assuming the RNS-E includes the GPS antenna and a wire harness adapter, then the order of connection would be the following:

Original wire harness -> RNS-E wire harness adapter -> AMI wire harness -> RNS-E

You would then plug in the Tune2Air into the AMI.

If you're looking for integrating BT for hands free phone calls, then you will need to get a BT module (OEM or other), and that wire harness would plug in between the RNS-E adapter and the wire harness for AMI. All of these would simply plug into each other like legos.

    So in order for me to be able to use pair my iOs device via BT for phone calls and music streaming I would need;

    Audi AMI interface - $200-$300
    Tune2Air - $90
    Audi BT module - $200

Is this correct? That's about $540 in parts. Is there a cheaper, third party module that would allow me to use the same features?

Also, if I want XM radio, I need a Sirius module?? Or is the RNS-E Mk2 XM ready?

The RNS-E will handle Sirius/XM just like the Concert and Symphony radios. The RNS-E adapter harness will bring that in to be controlled by the HU. Depending on the model of the satellite receiver, you may need to replace it with a newer version in order to work with RNS-E. The early satellite receivers that came with the B6 models are not compatible.

My Dension Gateway BT supports audio streaming and handsfree calling. It will tell you song titles and allow you to access your address book in the gauge cluster display and allows you to skip tracks. It will not display any song or phone information on the RNS-E, but that doesnt really bug me because I have it on the map all the time anyways.
