    Stock Rotor Weight

Just took delivery of new rotors and pads for the S6. Weighed the front rotors - holy cow- 33.3 pounds each!

Rears were 16.4 pounds I believe. That is a lot of weight for the front wheels.

They are massive aren't they? You don't get to appreciate how big brakes these are until you have them off the car.

But good baseline though. I have a set of front ceramics, tomorrow I'll weigh them to see if any reduction on weight. I doubt it though.

If your ceramics aren't significantly lighter, send them back - lightness, along with fade resistance, is their raison d'être.

It would be interesting to see how much lighter they might be. They are massive and it does make a difference not having them on the car to see how big they really are.

So what you are saying is that it is normal that front rotors on any car are that heavy? I thought it was interesting how heavy they are and I don't recall seeing it posted here.

I weighed them because I need to see if anything was missing from the box they came in as it busted open and the weight was almost 67 pounds. I needed to see if there had been brake pads in there (they were in another package). I know they are huge, but I was still surprised how heavy they are and thought someone else might find it interesting. If you didn't why did you need to post?

Not at this time. Since I am getting the other nice car (Thanks! :-)) I am trying to limit other expenses and thought the OEM might cost me a little less... I could be wrong, but didn't have too much time for research. Impressed I got almost 44K miles out of the originals.

I've fired off an email to RacingBrake.com to see if they're planning on offering a stock 2-piece replacement. It should shave some substantial weight. I don't know that I want to go to Stasis front brakes on my TDI, though I have a set on my other car.

Such an offering might be useful for a standard A6, but the S6 front brakes already use a trick 2-piece floating design with aluminum hat. An aftermarket offering won't be substantially lighter, unless they start removing material from the friction ring (rotor) - which is not a good idea.

So interesting enough, the 420x40mm 2008-2011 RS6 ceramics are already a significant weight savings over stock, but the C7 ceramics generation is even lighter.

I don't have any actual weight numbers yet, so its just a feeler so far and may be a waste of a post :)

Weight saving. Weight difference between S7 and RS7 ceramic is because RS7 have aluminium hats.

    RS7 Steel Brakes 390/356mm:

Front Calipers with Pads and Wear Sensors = 8.05kg each
Rear Calipers with Pads and Wear Sensors = 5.60kg each
    Front Disc 390x36mm = 13.80kg each
    Rear Disc 356x22mm = 7.25kg each

    RS7 Ceramic Brakes 420/370mm:

Front Calipers with Pads and Wear Sensors = 9.75kg each
Rear Calipers with Pads and Wear Sensors = 6.50kg each
    Front Disc 420x40mm = 8.25kg each
    Rear Disc 370x30mm = 4.55kg each

    S6, S7, S8 Ceramic Brakes 400/370mm:

Front Calipers with Pads and Wear Sensors = 9.75kg each
Rear Calipers with Pads and Wear Sensors = 6.50kg each
    Front Disc 400x38mm = 8.45kg each
    Rear Disc 370x30mm = 6.75kg each

    Kind Regards

Here is an interesting tidbit I remembered reading:

"One of the RS7's weight savers is a “wave” design for the standard steel brake rotors, measuring 15.5 inches in front and 14 inches rear with six-piston calipers. The disks' outer edge is machined with a unique scallop shape shaving unsprung weight 6.6 pounds. The carbon-ceramic option—available in North America when DRC arrives—sheds another 33 pounds."
