    255-45-20 stretch

Tried searching but didn't find anything. Anyone know will a 255 45 20 tire fit a 20x10.5 et27 wheel???? I'm pretty sure some stretch may be needed, just don't want it to be too much.

It'll depend on the tire, and how much concern you have regarding warranty replacement coverage. FWIW, most tire websites publish full specs, usually in .pdf format, which include min and max wheel width. For a 255 I think you'll find a 9.5" max width spec to be most common.

Personally, I'd go up to a 275mm tread width on a 10.5" wheel, but I know that's not what you're asking. Good luck with the decision.

For what its worth I am going through picking out wheel/tire sets currently. I am going to order through getyourwheels.com as they are active on this site. I have been PM'ing them here and for the sets I am looking at 20x8.5 off set 32 or 20x10 offset 35 they recommended 255/45 rubber for each. I am leaning towards the 20x10 but actually going 275/40 which they said will work too. Most tires I have looked into on tirerack.com in 255/45 say max rim width is 9 or 9.5

In reality, it's going to depend on the brand of tire. I've run a 255/35/19 on an 11.5" wheel only because the tire ran very large. If the tires you're looking at run small or true, it's going to be a bit too much stretch for most peoples taste.

I'm running 255 35 19 on 19x9.5 et 40 wheels on my s4, I'm fine with that amount of stretch as its minimal on the s4. This would be for the wife's q5 so it sounds like it might be a bit too much for the tire/vehicle....

Not to be Captain Obvious, but we're not talking about a whole lot here...255mm is a hair over 10", so you're at less than .25" (or ~ 6mm per side) difference between tread width and wheel width. Given the 45-series profile, you're looking at 114mm (barely less than 4.5") of sidewall to play with. Will it fit? Unquestionably. Will it look good? Maybe. Will it have an effect on ride, handling, and load characteristics? Yes....as a function of the sidewall stiffness. Will you pop the bead on a pothole? Probably not, but the risk is a wee bit greater. Maybe hep C vs ebola, in less than pleasant terms.

Now. Here I go generalizing, and I mean no offense to the fairer sex. But. This fitment does pretty much take the sidewall out of the equation when it comes to protecting the wheels from curb damage. Realistically, so would a 275/40 tire, so the dilemma is real no matter what. Between that and the variables above on ride and other dynamics.... Well, I love my wife dearly. If she drove a Q, I'd probably keep things stock, but if I did venture into the aftermarket, I'd be looking at 8.5" or 9" widths in a 20" fitment. Just my take.
