    6 Speed Manual Transmission Grinding

I posted a topic a while back and didn't really get anything from it. In first gear ONLY my transmission makes a grinding noise bad, then is gone soon as I shift out of 1st. I only let the rpms get to like 1,500 or 2 and shift because it sounds horrible! I have also noticed I can downshift into it and it doesn't do that or let it coast in first. It only does it when I'm applying the gas to it. Beyond me. And where could I get a new gear kit for if it is a chipped gear? Doesn't seem like that since it doesn't do it when I'm applying no gas to it.

Which 6-speed do you have? The 01X or the 01E? I haven't heard of this issue too much on the 6-speeds, but the 5-speed 01A - seemingly the ones behind the V6 in earlier B5's - would chip 1st gear on occasion. The result was a noisy 1st gear (the rest are quiet) and not much else. I don't think I heard of one actually failing further than that, although anything is possible.

The gears are available separately from Audi. If you share your trans type and code, we could get you some part numbers (and likely some astronomical prices). If you could possibly find somebody with the same box that failed a different way, you could strike a deal and scavenge the 1st gear set for a fair bit less. I might be inclined to just leave it alone.

Couldn't tell you which one, have no clue. I do have a 1.8T if that's helpful. I just HATE not being able to utilize my first gear at all!

Would I be better off getting a used transmission? Or get someone to regear it all? And I think my trans code is GJW, but as for the other I have no idea

GJW Means you have an 02x 6-speed. Its very common any manual A4 between 2004 and 2008 came with it (note I said A4 not S4).

You're best off buying a used trans to be honest.

My doesn't grind in first, more of an annoying whine. The worst is when exiting a toll booth with walls on boths sides, sounds horrible. Mine has almost 130K on it, it's been doing it since I got it at 100K, and probably well before. My plan is to drive it until it shits.
