    A4 Avant horrible gas mileage

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hi folks, I purchased a CPO 2011 A4 avant with 46,000 miles on it 3 months ago. I am averaging 13-14 miles per gallon in mostly city driving and can't figure out whats going on.

CEL is not on, tires are properly inflated and I can't see anything obviously wrong with the car that would affect the gas mileage.

I commute around 5 miles each way on city streets which is 95% of my driving - its not really stop and go just normal lights etc. So I'm getting around 13 mpg doing that kind of driving...but I took it up the coast on a freeway trip the other day and gassed it up before hand to see how if there would be any difference - I averaged 26 mpg on that drive using freeway only which I assume is exactly where it should be, or is that low as well?

I have been driving as conservatively as I can in my normal commute to see if this is driving habit related but I cannot get the mpg to move up past 14 mpg in the city.

    I'm using 91 octane.

This can't be normal for this car....can it?

Any suggestions for where to start would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Brad

What does your range say after filling up, I can have a 50 mile range and after 30 miles be at 0 range.

Range says 365 I think? Light comes on at 220 though. I've been calculating my mpg manually though - reset the odometer after every fill-up and dividing by how many gallons it take.

Do you have a VCDS cable if so you need to scan your car the light should not come 9 at 220 that's ridiculous plus you should have warranty. If they question the car take it to them with the fuel light on when it still says that much left.

Also there was another guy on here that was having the same issues and his turbo needed to be replaced I cannot remember the problem but it is a known one that Audi actually sent letters to people extending the warranty of the car.

I think he is saying he has 220 miles on the odometer when the gas light comes on.

I get very bad mileage in the city as well, always under 20mpg. On the highway however, I have gotten the DIS to display up to 38mpg. Something is wrong, I would take it in if you're under warranty.

Short driving city mileage is a killer. Plain and simple.

Definitely not normal. My '13 gets about 18mpg average on super short city trips, and I've gotten highway average on the dash display up to 33mpg steadily.

Thanks for your input everyone - just to clarify my gas light illuminates after I've only gone 220 miles. I'm going to take it into the Dealer on monday. If anyone has any other input as to what might be the problem I'm still interested!

    Thanks

I get around 300miles per tank with a daily commute of 40 miles, with about 30 of them city driving sitting in traffic. This seems a little low, although ive noticed short, spirited trips are a true gas drain. If I do all highway @ around 75-80mph, i get around 400miles/tank (b8 avant).
Would be interested to hear what the dealer says.

Its true. I deal with this on my daily commute. It is what it is. Short trips, car hardly warms up, it drinks the gas.

Mine is about 20mpg on short (6 miles from home to the office) trips and 31mpg at a 70 mph cruise.

Didn't someone else on here have a similar problem, horrible gas mileage with no codes and it ended up being the mass air flow sensor?

I've got a 2011 Avant as well and the lowest I've seen is 18 mpg driving on short street only trips. Im usually in manual mode using the paddles and shifting around 3k rpm (really miss driving a manual). Either way Id check out your plugs, carbon buildup, air filter, etc. 'cause those numbers are definitely not normal.

Yup, good call, I tracked it down.

He says MAP sensor but I assume that it autocorrected from MAF.

Don't assume if you're talking about me.

New MAF did nothing for me. MAP had corrosion between pins and got shady. You would think a CEL would come up but it didn't throw one.

Also new from the last update: fuel filter, fuel pump, rail pressure sender and coolant temp sensor, timing chain and tensioner. Last tank got me 26mpg, up from about 15mpg when I got the car.

Only time I ever got a CEL was a deliberate loose fuel cap condition to see if it even worked!

Haha my bad, I didn't know that a MAP would cause that issue. I'm glad that you got yours addressed though, and hopefully this list will help the OP as well.

No, the OP for http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...g-2010-a4-2-0t was 100pr00f, he had horrible fuel mileage and threw a lot of parts at it before finding out it was the MAF, he had 0 codes related to it, which is baffling.

I know the OP is 100proof. When I asked if it was resolved he had this to say:

"No its still not resolved iv come to accept the unfortunate down side of owning a quattro... im guessing when people tell me that 12mpg is insane they don't realize that when i say mostly city driving i MEAN mostly city driving if i take it on the highway ill go higher i would say 280 to the full tank."

And his last comment was that he would look into a ECT sensor. That's why I thought ProjectBlackout was referring to my comment.

I have to do some digging when I get some time. Personally I cleaned my MAF prophylactically and my car never threw any codes. I received a new fuel filter which I will change sometime this year (have 43k on the avant). I most likely won't change my fuel pump until 75 or 100k.

I'll have to check out the MAP sensor as well.

Be careful unscrewing the plastic "union ring" or, like me, you might need to change the pump sooner! I was using a pair of big screw drivers crossed over one another and slipped when one of the plastic ribs let go while tightening the ring. I struck the fuel outlet nipple and it went flying into the windshield... I nearly puked when I saw what actually went flying!

Yeah I saw that post. I wish the union ring was metal like in previous platforms. I'll be careful and if I run into issues, I guess I'll just have to order the pump/filter combo

So I took the car to the Dealership to have the gas mileage checked out - they initially said there were no codes and nothing they could see was wrong and wanted to give it back but then they agreed to take it overnight for a long term test drive - they told me that they drove the car 63 miles and it averaged 18 miles to the gallon and that was FINE - no problems.

They said the sticker of 21-29 was for "ideal conditions" and that 18 was all I should expect in this car.

I am now hitting my head against a wall.
