    Slow acceleration from a stop.

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
My 06 A4 2.0T quarto has been very slow when accelerating from a stop. Like it hesitates for a few seconds then takes off. I have a code but its a coolant P2181 code. Any ideas? Could it be transmission related?

    Thanks

    It's a 2.0T A4

Seriously though I would just chaulk it up to lag unless you've noticed a sudden change. Are you on a stock tune?

How long have you had the car? When's the last time you changed spark plugs, air filter, checked MAF, etc? Do you have a Quattro or FWD (I only ask because if you have FWD then you have a CVT, and that transmission is slow from a dead stop)?

I just got the car. Its a quattro and has about 117K on it. Its bone stock and i just did a tune up on it. Now plugs and coils. It seems to bog out for a second, like i let off the gas. Its weird. I heard these cars have carbon build up problems. What can i do about that? Seafoam?

Did you go OEM for coils and plugs? Was it sluggish before you replaced them? Have you scanned for codes with VAGCOM (not the generic OBDII scanner)? Changed the air filter yet, or looked to see if it's really dirty?

Quattro Tip or 6mt? If Tip it's normal. Try flipping over to sport mode and shifting yourself to see if that remedies your problem. I hate when mine does it.

Treat cvt like manual. Like rev it until 1k rpms and then accelerate. Cvts go into neutral when brake applied. That causes a hesitation. Normal for cvt. Rev an go! Problem solved.

Guys, as stated in his original post he's Quattro.
OP, was it dealer or private purchase? Has it been like this since you bought it? I'd ask for service records at least you'll what it needs. Also, take care of that coolant code. Believe it or not it can hinder the performance of your car. Start from there. You mentioned tune-up but what else did they do? Things I would check/replace (in order) if not done during tune-up:
    -Diverter Valve (updated piston style)
    -N80 Purge Valve
    -Air Filter
    -Spark Plugs
    -Fuel Filter

Ok thanks guys! Its an automatic trans. I bought the car for suuuuuper cheap from a neighbor because the guy though it needed a motor. He said he took it to a show and they told him it needed a new cam. When i got it it ran like crap. Misfired like crazy. So i put new plugs in (ac delco) i went with cheaper plugs at the time because i wasn't sure what i was going to do with the car. It helped a bit but still still misfired. So i found out there was a cylinder 3 misfire so i replaced that one coil and it ran great. Just sluggish off the line. I also just changed the cam fowler and it was worn but not broke or missing any pieces. That's when i decided to keep the car. Just trying to see if there's anything else I can do. I know it needs a new air filter. When i tool it apart it looked like a birds nest in the upper plastic intake pipe(where the screen is).

Whats with this diverter valve? Is it essentially a blow-of valve? also, is the fuel filter easy to change? Where is it located?

    Thanks again guys!

Get rid of those AC Delco and replace with OEM plugs from Audi (no need to gap), your car will love you...and get all the things I mentioned replaced. Yes, DV is aka Blow-Off Valve. The N80 is super super easy to replace sitting right on top.

Also, what about the coils? I replaced the one with a $23 one from advanced auto. Should i replae the others and does the brand make a big difference?

OEM coil packs only. The aftermarket ones are complete shit. The DV is under the car. Check out the tech board or search via google for diverter valve on a B7.

Only if you get a DV+, otherwise stick with OEM. There are quite a few threads regarding DVs - check them out.

Make sure the gap is right. Even if it is pre gapped you need to check. You can buy oem or r8 coil packs just as cheap as what you paid from multiple vendors from the forum. Go with the gfb diverter valve. Also get a tune.

Carbon build up you have to scrap off, or media blast. Seafoam doesn't do much of anything because we have direct injection. Check your PVC valve.

I'm sorry but I'm stage 2 apr with a tip Quattro and in first gear with the pedal floored from a stop its like the car yawns... Then hold on to your nutsack. It's turbo lag at its finest. Does the same thing happen when your in second gear with a slight amount of throttle applied then full throttle? I doubt it. All turbos no matter how small will have a lag time and that's why you experience the immediate lag off initial throttle. It sucks.. But once the turbo spools it's so sweet. Fuck linear power!! Haha

P.s. If it's a coolant code you're throwing get it checked out IMMEDIATELY

^^^ yea this helps everything but your drivetrain haha.. But biged243 is right. It's a problem of building boost before you let go of the brake. If you do it right then you'll take off pretty damn quick but this process is also very stressful to the drivetrain

Ok so I called audi and there are some recalls on my car. A PCV recall and some intake manifold flap thing. Can this be the cause? Also, where is the coolant temp sensor located? I am going to replace it and see if that is what is causing the coolant code.

Coolant temp sensor is in the back of the engine in the left side. You can reach it from the top. There's a DIY on here for that too. Super easy to replace.

Since you'll be losing some Coolant be SURE you only put the g13 from audi in. Is the Coolant you have in there now redish?

You will lose a lot of coolant, so have something handy under the coolant sensor to catch/divert the coolant to a bucket.

If the temp sensor doesn't fix the code its probably the thermostat. If your looking to fight the pcv issue as well as carbon buildup, I highly recommend the 034 motorsports PCV delete/catch can. You will get used to the way the car drives. Drive it in manual mode i think you will like how it drives compared to D.
