No it does not charge the battery. There is a battery button you press to open the key, you can access it by removing the emergency key from your main key.

Yeah, replace the battery (CR 2032) but don't worry if it dies in the meantime. Even if the battery is totally dead you can use the physical key in the drivers door and insert the fob into the dash slot to start the car. The battery is only for the remote/keyless functions.

Not to hijack the thread, but if the key dies does it retain its programming or does it have to be reprogrammed? Sorry OP.

It maintains its programming. I have replaced 3 in the last 3 weeks, you can get a 5 pack of batteries on amazon for like 4 bucks shipped. Takes like 10 seconds to swap just take the key out and then use the same method to remove the inner plastic part. It has a rubber seal so it takes a bit more of a pull just make sure you are pushing the black button.

well side note. Sometimes if you have 2 keys and only use one and not use the other for like 8 months or so. I have seen them loose programming or being pushed out since the system doesn't see it being used. Don't know if it will happen on audi's I was told this when I bought the car just use the 2nd key from time to time. Ive seen this happen on Mitsu's with the advanced keyless loose programming from someone not using the key for 6 months or more.

No such thing. What could happen is if you take your car in for service and they do a reset of the internal modules to default for some stupid reason. That resets the key pairing and when you get home, the other key doesn't work. If they don't ever do that, no problems. Basically, the shit that resets your VAGCOM settings could also cause your spare keys not to work depending on what the idiot mechanic did.

I think it would be cool tech to recharge in the key slot. But can they make a battery that small that is rechargeable?

My BMW (2001) key recharged while in the slot, but that was a physical key with buttons on it which you had to put in the slot to start the car. I use to swap keys occasionally to keep them both charged up.

Not sure if the keyless entry BMW fobs work this way.

Yes it includes the plastic spare "emergency" key (it's not really a valet key.)

My BMW key would get charged and it did not have comfort access, i had to plug the key in that slot and hit start/stop button.

If you give the valet the plastic key, you've just given him access to the trunk and glove box. For valet mode, you take the metal key out of the clip thing, push the valet mode button inside the glovebox, manually lock the glove box and rear seats and then give the guy the clip thing only. Yes it can start the car like that.

As others mentioned, it doesn't charge the key. With that said, I did learn if you leave your key in the car while parked in a garage it does drain the battery faster. The car "sees" in the key inside the car.
