I will be picking some up tomorrow as I am due for a change.

Anyone know a good place to buy the filter? Everywhere I look, shipping is almost the cost of the filter. At this point I will just be driving to the dealer to pick one up. Cheaper that way. Unless someone has a link to the filter with free shipping???

Online it shows in stock at my local Walmart. I will be heading down there today to pick up a couple jugs of that.

If your going to buy it at walmart. I suggest doing the Site to Store pick up option to make sure its there and ready for you to go and get. Most of the time when i go there the 0-40 shelf is empty or only has one on it. But I will always do the site to store local pick up option to make sure its there and ready before i go.

If you plan on keeping the car for a while, buy the kit of 5 MANN filters from ECS Tuning. It'll be cheaper than buying them from the dealer.

Last year, I bought a kit of 5 MANN filters and washers for my S4, and a kit of 5 MANN filters for my 335i. Even with shipping, it still costs less than the dealer.

Don't want to start the old 'which oil is better' pissing match, but I thought Mobi1 was no longer considered a good synthetic oil to use? Something about the base's they use not making it a true synthetic oil anymore? I stopped using it years ago, and just stick with the same oil the factory uses - Castrol for oil changes on my Audis.

Well, in my experience, that's all oil discussions ever end up being on any forum - a pissing contest. So I get whatever is on sale...If it means anything, Mobil 1's 0w40 (European car formula) seems to be close in spec to Shell Rotella T6 which is popular, which is similar to Motul 8100 X-Cess 5w40 which is also popular. I don't really care what it's made out of, and I'm not about to become a chemist so I can understand how the molecules work, how much ZDDP I need, polarity, and so on. It is VW 505 00/502 00 approved and many have used it before me with no issues, so I have no problem with it. If anything bad happens, I will take action then - rebuild the engine, whatever.

I don't care what the factory uses. The factory has also made many dumb decisions before. They have also made many good ones. How do you know it's not some marketing deal? What's wrong with using other approved oil besides Castrol? With how big the approved list is, one of the oils is bound to be on sale at any time, so I guess I'll try them all and see what I like. Chances are, they'll all feel the same to me, and no one oil will give me goosebumps while I drive...I wouldn't be surprised if Audi picked the oils on their spec for reasons including but not limited to, the way it transfers/holds oil pressure. The M1 is also popular for the B6S4 and many Mercedes I believe.

You can't really compare anything to the dealer, because a $60-$300 steering rack is $1-$3k at the dealer...

How about comparing it to places like GAP, Europaparts, Pelicanparts, Autohausaz, Blauparts, FCP Groton, PureMS, USP motorsports, and so on...

I bought wheels for $150 once. That would have cost me $2k+ at a dealer. Does that mean I got a good deal? Does that even mean anything? No, not really..

Mann-Hummel is the OEM supplier for filters on this car. In other words, you will probably pay more at the dealer, because they tend to buy them in bulk. And slap a few Audi stickers on them. Then sell it for more. They look exactly the same. They are the same.

You show me a Castrol VW approved 0-40 or 5-40 that's as easy to find as the M1 and doesn't burn off quicker and I'll switch to it. I've run M1 in all my cars for the past 20 years and no problems. On one car before I ran Redline and that was good oil too, but fuk dat expense now with 7.2Q oil changes on this engine.

yes, ignore it. back when the Mann site was actually working, i verified the part #. I've also ordered a couple and already used 1 in my car. Exactly as OEM.

Grabbed three jugs of it today.

I missed the info on the Mann filters via Amazon. I looked at that last night but did not purchase since it said it would not fit my car. Odd. In any event, I got OEM filters from the dealer cheaper than what I could have got from ECS or anyone else... other than Amazon. I will remember that for next time.

I also purchased a Mityvac, 32mm socket, annnnd new fogs - even though Amazon says they will not fit my car as well. WTF? I know they will fit.

In any event, I will be doing my first top to bottom oil change (~20K miles) next Wednesday.

If you can find it (not easy) the Penzoil Ultra 5W-40is an excellent choice for a few extra dollars, but Mobil 1 or any good 0-40 or 5-40 full synthetic is a good choice in an S4 or most any euro high performance engine. Start reading about different oil choices on the web and you will see it never ends. They are all close. Just change it regularly and they are all about the same.

Yes, Amazon is wrong. They actually listed it as compatible when I first ordered it and then it changed for some reason. You can verify the part number on the manufacturer's website.

Thanks for all the information. Filter and oil purchased from Amazon and Walmart. Couldn't have been easier as I prepare for my first oil change on my 2014 S4. Has anyone posted a video on how to do the oil change and what tools are needed? Just curious. Thanks.

Plug no. Washer, yes. It is a crush washer and meant for one time use.

I would run the car and check for leaks from the plug. Sometimes you can get away with re-using it a few times, but it's not recommended because they're one-time-use crush washers. If the drain plug is anything like other Audis, then the washer/seal is integrated into the plug and has to be destroyed to remove it, because its too tight to slide off and over the threads. Maybe you can slide on a slightly over-sized one, or buy another plug that works with removable washers. Maybe a magnetic drain plug?

Oil filters usually don't come with drain plug washers. Some cars require oil filter O-rings and sometimes they come with that though.

How much is the jug? I saw people saying around $10 after rebate but i see it at walmart for 22 and a $7 rebate. And also, how does this work? How do you get Walmart to do it?

Picked up two jugs. Damn things are $22 and each quart is like $7.xx. I needed 3 quarts in bottles, but by that time I'd spend the same amount for 3 as I did for the 5 in the jug. So I bought two jugs and I'll use one 1.5 jugs per change... buy another jug next time and it'll be enough for the next change... give or take.

if you do 5k miles changes, you're probably ok reusing the same washer till the next change. Just check your oil level frequently, and if you feel like it, get under the car and check for leaking. If you are leaking more than a tiny bit, instead of doing another oil change, i'd try putting some gasket maker (like this http://www.amazon.com/Permatex-82180...s=gasket+maker) around the drain plug and see if that holds till the next oil change.

that's what i do... get 3 jugs to last me 2 changes. almost perfectly half a jug left from the last change. It's not like brake fluid, you can let it sit for 6 months after it's been open, right?
