    Axle removal tools

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Gonna be replacing my drivers side axle with one from ECS this week. I need to buy the tools today, but am not near the car. Could anyone tell me the specific size you need for the main axle bolt, and the bolts that mount it to the transmission?

    Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

17mm ALLEN socket for the hub bolt

12mm triple square or "spline" bolts on the tranny flange. 90% sure on that size.

If you have an OEM axle chances are you will need a large allen to removeb the shoulder bolt from the hub. I'd pop the lug cover off and have a look.
    Avants do it better!

Correct. 17mm as stated below. EDIT: I was thinking Allen but didn't write it. Previous post adjusted.

Make sure your wheel is on the ground when you try to crack that baby loose. I needed an 8 foot breaker bar. It is a "torque to yield" bolt as well. That means one time use. Get a new one.

    I thought it was a 14?

In any case, you'd be better off just having a good set of hex bits and triple squares. I've been using a large hex bit set I got from autozone for like 40 bucks without issue for years.

I have also seen new axles come with regular hex head axle bolts that are like 32mm or something

I do have all the correct tools at home, but not at school. Since I won't be home soon, I just wanted to get some for now.

Its a 12mm triple square for the inter bolts that go to the trans flange.. 17mm are the front axle bolt through the hub. I used the jack handle sleeved over as an extension to my breaker bar to get that sucker loose. I have broke a couple 1/2in bits before trying to get one of those bitches off..

Also, to each their own but I think it's a good idea to put the axle heat shield back on. It takes hardly any time and I've heard that without it the inner boots will tear more easily/quickly

Broke 2 1/2 inch drive bits trying to get it off. Soaked in PB last night. Tapped on it to break it loose. Still it's not budging. It's fucking intense. Gotta order some new ones. Maybe next week will be better.

You do have someone on the brakes as well, right? Even on the ground it is smart to have someone stand on the brakes to break the shoulder bolts.

A trick I use to get the outer axle bolt off is to get a nice long breaker bar. And put a jack under the breaker bar and jack the breaker bar up to break the axle nut loose. Works for me every time when I'm removing Audi outer axle bolts.

I generally just use a breaker bar with someone on the brakes. If your bits are breaking maybe get some better bits? lol not much else you can do. I suppose if it really isn't happening you could maybe grind the head off of the bolt or cut it off with a torch
