    Engine pull, now code 16885

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So I just finished with an engine pull, K04 build. Everything back in place and am not getting the code 16885. Looks like the vehicle speed sensor (G22). The car seems to run ok, but my speedometer is nonfunctional. Initially the speedometer was bouncing around, now it is totally not working. Also, noticed the the gas tank needle is all over the place. Not sure if they are related.

Is this related to the speed sensor that sits in the transmission housing? Any thing else it could be?

    Thanks.

The other thing I came across is the speed sensor that sits on the left side of the front differential.

Not sure where to start first. Will take a look at things in daylight and see what it looks like.

Not the crank sensor. Turned out to be the front ABS wheel speed sensor. Thought it would have given me an ABS light?

One of the things so obvious you forget to check it.

Tell me about it. Must have clipped it with the suspension work.

I dont think that is going to fix it, thats the pad wear sensor.
G22 is on the side of the tranny and will give you a 5k rev limit if bad.

Is it the sensor that sits in the bell housing?

No, that is the crank sensor.
The one you are looking for is right above the dside cv, behind the heat shield.

Got it. I don't have a Bentley yet. Is this the sensor?

Trying to find the OEM part number for it.

Thanks. That's the sheet for a C4 S6. Do you know if it's the same part number?

Thanks. I also got primary O2 sensor codes with the new downpipes. Have to sort that out as well.

I think they get unhappy coming out of the old ones sometimes.
If they were tight, that snap when they break loose can be tough on them.

Zilla, thanks for your help. Just getting into the S4 world. Clearly going to be a love/hate relationship.

So I replaced the vehicle speed sensor. What an incredible pain to get to. Still getting the code 16885 and no spedometer readout. Doing a cluster output test everything looks good. Any other thoughts? Thanks.

Check continuity on the wiring and maybe the plugs near the ecu.
Iirc, that wire goes to the cluster, then ecu.

In addition to that the mileage is no longer moving and the fuel gauge is off. I have read somewhere that they could all be related. That being said I just installed an 044 fuel pump so it's possible that I dinged up the fuel sender while there. Still can't explain the mileage though. Will look at it tomorrow.

Odo runs off the vss, pulse per mile thing I think.

You know how to read wiring diags? I can send them to you so you can test the wiring if needed.

Wish I could say I can read them. From what I can tell the vss goes back to the t6c connector which sits below the ECU, then goes to the cluster from a brown wire with a white stripe. This is the best I can come up with. I am willing to try and look at them.

The other thing I have come across is the magnetic ring that sits in the diff housing to signal the vss. Is there any way to identify if that is that case without pulling apart the housing?
    Thanks.

Looking at the wiring diagrams, do the numbers 172 and 83 just define the path the wires take? Looks like the sensor sends a ground wire to path 83, then a brown and red wire to 10 pin wiring connector in the plenum below the ECU and then from there into the cluster at the green connector pin 5.

The wires from the speed sensor go into the main wiring harness then to the ECU box. Does the motor need to come out in order to get to the wiring harness?

Also, how do you diagnose a faulty speed sender ring in the diff without taking the diff apart?

For the 172, go to the page that has 172 in the row right below the pic. Look straight up from the 172 and you will see a box that has a 225 in it.
This is just how they link the wiring on different pages.

The 83 is prob going to be a grounding cluster, like the one on the dside firewall.
