    Valve Cover Gasket Replacement

I searched the forum and came up with a lot of random threads so I'm just gonna post. Has anyone replaced their valve cover gasket and if so we're there any hiccups or does anyone have any extra information to help me out? Thanks.

Lots have done it. It is as simple as unbolting the valve cover, swapping the gaskets, and putting it back. Use a "star" torque sequence to help ensure you get a good seal and make sure the surfaces are clean.

just make sure the surfaces are clean, I used a razor blade to scrape off any old residue. It may take more than one try. I changed mine to resolve a oil leak issue. solved the original leak but created another in a different spot. Take your time, make sure the gasket is seated properly.

Just did mine too...like Aznkae take your time in cleaning and seating it good...make sure there is NO oil where the gasket sits....it will not get a good seal if there is some oil there. Easy job...I went back after a day or two to retighten the bolts.

If you find a valve cover bolt that needs to be replaced, for the love of all that's holy, don't do what my local garage did and put any 10mm bolt in there with a makeshift spacer. Spend the $5 and get an OEM bolt. Remember, torque is 10nm, about 7.4ft/lbs - don't overtorque.

Question. Went to do this and my buddies torque wrench wasn't working and I snapped a bolt. Of course. So I called and ordered a bolt from the dealer. Can I drive it missing one bolt about 20 min away? I can't leave it in my buddies garage.

Or is there something I can use to plug it until the proper bolt arrives

I'm having the bolt drilled out tonight and won't have a new bolt until SAT. Won't it leak everywhere?

Like I said mine was out for almost 4 months it may leak a little but it's really not a big deal. This does not effect how the engine runs.

Alright. Well it doesn't seem like too much of an option so I'll take your word for it. Thank you.

even if it leaks a little it won't be a significant amount. I got the gasket boogered up and drove 100+ miles with a small leak when I did mine.

Does anyone recommend using a sealant on the valve cover gasket?

Nope! it will be messy and a bitch to clean later and you risk getting sealant inside the cylinder head.
