Best brake options for daily driver

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I'm due for brakes. fronts pads are low, and rotors are original with 76k miles on them. Rears have good pad and same rotor wear as fronts, but squeel real bad. I have been looking at ECS and audi, but I am not sure what to go with. It is a daily driver, but i also have a little fun every now and then. I like the Audi rotors, which I believe are Brembo, and I like the Audi pad stopping power, but hate the dust. I can clean my rims drive one day and they are covered again. Any opinions would be great.

No need to upgrade the rotors or calipers, really, unless you are heavily modified and going to the track a lot. Just get a low dust pad. I bought Hawk Performance pads, and the dust is pretty low. There are a ton of options out there, and quite a few threads on the subject, too.

El cheapo rotors, Hawk HPS pads, and stainless lines with a good fluid flush.

Ceramic pads are your best option. Hawk seems to be the popular favorite. Best rotors for the least amount of money are ABT from eBay. No point in upgrading rotors unless they need to be replaced though.

I am really leaning toward stock rotors, but really wasn't sure on pads. I have seen ebc yellow stuff pads, but havnt seen much on them.

was wondering the same thing...next thing to do... also, do you guys recomend not removing the calipers if you just need pads replaced (saw it in another thread) or removing them to replace?

I don't know I have read a lot of people don't like the hawk hps pads. Not much initial bite. What about akebonos

I believe the akebonos a lot of people get a clank out of them. At 75k+ mile it would be good to replace both rotor and pads! most likely the rotors have some type of groves in them so it will wear the pads quicker. Also I think you saw people talking about the caliper carrier (bracket).

This 100%. Centric rotors are great affordable rotor and are used as the source blanks (i have been told) for many premium companies. I picked up some centric performance rotors for about 140 for all four. Hawk HPS pad, SS lines and some ATE type 200 fluid and you will be set. Oem rotors are super soft and notch easy.

I have centric disc and cant say bad thing about them. But i have stop tech pad and they seem to leave some brake dust deposit on the disc and give me vibrations innfront when braking . I might check for harder compound pads.

Vibrations would be from a wrapped rotor.

Zimmerman rotors and TRW pads are the best oemish combo imo. Bit more expensive than going Centric or Ebay but worth it.

good catch. yeah, looks like they banned it last year... because its blue lol. I still have enough for 2 flushes. I think that we can still find it online, but its 'illegal' to use on the street.

Cheaper for me to buy ATE from my parts store than oem brake fluid. I could send you some with some kinder surprise eggs :)

I run Zimmerman blanks with hawk hps pads and a Tyrol stiffening kit. I love the setup, I think it stops 1000 times better than my old setup of textar pads, Tyrol stiffening kit and Zimmerman cross drilled rotors.

I'm gonna be doing my fronts at the end of the month. I didn't see any standard ABT rotors on ebay, but Amazon has the Raybestos 980499R for $48 each w/free shipping.

Any solid reason to go with the Hawk pads over the Akebonos?

Buy premium centric rotors on rockauto. like $60 each. Cheap rotors will warp quicker since they have a lower carbon content. Stoptech street pads are great as well

I am about to do Akebono pads with Meyle coated rotors. Total from ECS is $400 for all 4. Akebono has a harder initial bite and can withstand the heat of a track day as well. Brakes are not an area you want to skimp on. If you are changing the material of the pads you need to replace the rotors. If you drive hard and want high performance pads, get a good set of rotors to match.

I just installed akebonos with meyle rotors and the total from ecs was $360 +shipping. Also I flushed the fluid. So far the akebonos feel amazingly smooth, they are exactly what you want on a luxury car but they also are made for high performance. No dust that I have seen yet which is great because titanium wheels are a pain in the ass to keep clean with oem pads. Be sure to check the back side of the rotors because they are usually far worse. The meyle rotors are top quality, I am pretty sure they make the drilled and slotted rotors for ecs so they have the geomet coating. While breaking my new setup in the other day i was trying to make them fade and couldn't.

Don't know about the rotors but powerstop (ceramic) pads are junk. I threw them away after a month in my other car. No bite and no feel at all.
