    error code p2187 help

So I recently got my oil-change done ~3/4 weeks ago and my car was running fine (MY12 A4) and out of nowhere my check engine light came on. I took it to a local Autozone to see what it was and the lady told me it was probably my gas cap. So I tightened that and drove around hoping the driving around would make the light dissappear but that didn't happen and 100 miles later I took it to another O'Reilly near me and the guy this time gave me the same code P2187 "System too lean at idle (Bank 1)" and he told me Bank 1 is upfront? so it might be a faulty oxygen sensor.

and with the help of google i found that it could be either of these or a plethora of other things. I was wondering if someone on here has better insight? I don't have a vag-com of my own to hook up and see :/ but I maybe I could borrow one and see what it says. Will the Ross-Tech have more detail than just the error code and that message?

Do I have to first "clear" the CEL and then tighten my gas cap and drive around to see if it comes on again?

Its not usually the sensor that fails. The front O2 sensor is reading too much air is in the burn. This usually means an air leak on the intake side. That code is fairly commonly associated with the PCV when it fails. It could possible be an intake manifold failure but that usually generates more codes and you will have a rough idle as its a bigger air leak.

    Thanks van
So it's not too bad that I'm driving around with it?
Oh and I guess that means that if it was my gas cap I wouldn't have had to reset the code then tighten it? Just tightening the gas cap and driving around should have worked. Right?
And the dealership would be my best bet to get it fixed?

    UPDATE:
So when the car is in Neutral or Park for a while (i.e. ~2-5 min) it starts shaking...almost like what an old car would do if it's not getting enough gas and going to shut off. The engine also falls to 750-800 rpm so If I rev it a little the shaking stops. I can feel it in drive as well but very little.
Hope this shines a little light for anyone else out there. Thanks in advance.

Do you have a HFC w/spacer? I got this code when running that combo.

I'm willing to bet it's your PCV. Pull the engine cover off and see if there is any oil around your coil packs or loose hoses.

Sorry to hijack this thread but I got this same code 3 weeks ago after a road trip took it to O'Reilly was told P2187 then it just went off by itself. Now it's back again. Not sure if I should bring it to the dealer or if you ever figured out what was causing this and I could DIY

I fought this code for several months and mine ended up being the front crank seal, even a really small vacuum leak will throw the code, mine never shook like yours so I am guessing you have a bigger leak. I would focus on the PCV or take it to the dealer

I just had this issue last month and it was the PCV valve. You should be able to hear a high pitched whistle coming from the PCV valve if you have this issue. It's a very easy fix that takes about 40 minutes to swap out and the part only costs around $130.
