Buying used Q7 TDI ... need you input.

    Hello guys,

I've never had Audi but always admired their products so now I am coming very close to get 2010 Q7 TDI S-line with 33K miles. Just test drove it and really enjoyed it. I would like to ask a few questions if I may and hope you can help me.

    1. What to look before I buy? Is that year and model reliable? What kind of expenses should I expect?

    2. Warranty (I am not sure the car has one). Should I get one? What kind?

    Thank you all !!!

    IL

PS Years ago I had German car (2001 BMW 740i Sport) and got overwelemed with repair bills depite the fact it was the best (and the most fun car) car to drive. Now I have Lexus LS which is boring but very reliable.

Is this the Q7 at Porsche Arlington?

Although I don't own a TDI, I can tell you that you'll go through pads/rotors and tires fairly quickly. I'm about to install new brakes for the 1st time and it's only been 23k miles.

The factory warranty still might be valid based on miles. See what kind of extended warranty they will offer you. Chances are you can get a better price outside the dealership.

See if you can negotiate with the dealer to install new pads/rotors before you purchase.

    Thank you Buchwheat2088,

How do you like it your Q7?
Yes, the Q7 is at Porsche Arlington and the car does not have any warranty, where can I get extended warranty?
    Thank you again,

So first off, that is a great find. Price and mileage are great for what was consider top of the line for that year. The factory warranty remain on the vehicle up to 50,000 miles or 4 years from the original in-service date. There are many great third party warranty companies out there. It's a toss up on whether you would get a good deal from the dealer partner provider or finding on on your own. Shopping around is the key.

If you could some way persuade the Audi dealership to purchase the Q7 and then run it through there CPO certification..........

i actually think that price is a bit high. especially if it is not CPO. granted that s-line and prestige package are pricey options but the packages alone dont retain a whole lot of value on the used market. given the age of the vehicle, it does not have a warranty nor can you get one now since its expired. at least not through audi. you can always buy a private warranty for several grand to cover you up to a certain number of miles. keep in mind too that 2010 got a few cosmetic changes, which is good, but in 2011 they added the ZF-sourced 8-speed auto transmission, which is a decent upgrade from the 6-speed in the 2010 model. in my experience, audi didnt do such a great job on their 6-speed autos but i also didnt have one paired to a Q7. from what ive seen, it hasnt been so bad on the Q7. i bought my 2011 TDI a year ago with 52k miles on it for 41k for reference. if i were you, id try to get them down some on the price and use the fact that it is not CPO and missing the 8-speed auto and that a new model is due out soon. let them offer you the vehicle for less or to throw in a CPO warranty up to 100k miles. like you heard above, the Q7 tends to eat tires and brakes and the TDI has the added expense of the adblue service, albeit minimal. regardless, maintenance costs on audis have gotten ridiculous. the more options you have, the more things that can break and less and less stuff seems to be covered under warranty even when you have a warranty. and even if you have a warranty, audi seems to hunt for any reason possible to void it or deny warranty claims, e.g., non-oem tires.

all that being said, i love my Q7, especially in diesel form. theres very little compromised (aside from costs of ownership, the Q7 is the highest cost in the brand) and the vehicle is surprisingly agile and fuel efficient. GL

Definitely use sickspeed's advice about getting them to drop price based on the fact that it's not CPO'ed. Missing the 8 speed transmission is a bummer especially when paired up with the TDI the gas mileage is really great from what i've heard. My '09 has the 6 speed and my wife's '11 Q5 has the 8 speed and although it's two different models, I can definitely tell the difference between both transmissions.

Regardless...I think you should still persue the Q7. I've been trying to convince my wife to trade up our '09 Q7 3.6 for a newer TDI model, but she won't budge. I can spend all day explaining the benefits of diesel, especially in a large SUV like the Q7, but she still wants gas.

Going to wait until the new design comes out for MY16 and then hopefully the wife changes her mind.

i just noticed that the listing says it has a warranty so you should inquire about the details of that. one thing about the transmission is that the 8-speed is sourced from ZF who is known for developing solid transmissions whereas the former 6-speed was an in-house product if iirc. i just think that sourcing parts from a company specializing in them is wise. and it does translate to slightly better fuel economy and smoothness as well as higher resale and potential dependability. but again, its splitting hairs at that point.

the 3.6 is a real dog in the Q7 given how heavy it actually is so id avoid that engine if you can. its a good way to get into the Q7 more cheaply though. and one drawback to the TDI is that not every station has diesel so you need to adapt. ive only been sol a couple of times at my local stations.

personally, i am excited to see what the next gen Q7 looks like but i am also intrigued by the just-revealed new XC90. http://www.autoblog.com/2014/08/26/2...aled-official/
and id consider a cayenne or toureg if the third row seat was an option. food for thought..

    Sickspeed,

Yeah, if I were more knowledgable back when I purchased my 3.6, I probably would have skipped out on it. But I was lured in by the fact it was a lease turn-in, had S-Line package, Mugello Blue, a full year left on factory warranty and CPO'ed.

I would have stuck it out another year with my Acura and waited for at least a 2010 TDI because I would have gotten the facelift...but too late now! The 3.6 feels a lot more heavy because of the lack in torque/HP and the 6 spd trans. MPG isn't too bad on highway when I'm cruising, but around town it's awful.

    Looking forward to the 2016s.

You have to remember the area in where the vehicle is located. It's actually listed below average for the DC metro area.

what are you using to estimate prices? im in the dc metro area and based on what im seeing and experienced, a reasonable price would be between 35-40k depending on whether it has a warranty and maybe some of the pricier options like adaptive air suspension and the B&O sound system.

interesting. i think the black book might be a bit misleading since it appears to assume something about the options. like i said, some of the options can get pricey, such as the sound system, air suspension, and wheels/tires. the car in question doesnt appear to have the sound system or air suspension and the black book values seems to suggest these options might be included, i.e., "fully loaded." the devil is in the details. coincidentally, id be weary of those 21" wheels and tires too. not for quality but cost. tires for 20" or 22" wheels are cheaper than for the 21". considering how quickly you might go through tires, that could be a cost to keep in mind.
