Will the B6 S4 6speed manual transmission directly bolt into a B6 A4 1.8t quattro with manual transmission also?
    thanks

slight thread hijack and probably should search it...

but is the 6MT that came stock in my 04 1.8t A4 the same as the S4 6MT or is that one beefier or something to handle the V8?

the S4 comes with the 03A tranny. The 6-speed 1.8t comes with the 02x tranny. I would imagine the 03A is more robust, but I have no idea.

It's 0A3, and made by Getrag. I hear it's smooth and robust. I also hear that all Audi did for their transmissions was copy the Getrag design.

The 0A3 probably doesn't have gear ratios optimized for the 1.8T. You can find out the ratios on ETKA, and use a free online calculator to figure out things like what RPM's you will be running, at what speed. I've looked into all of the transmission codes, for converting my 04' 3.0 to 6MT, and found that they were either not as economical as the one made specifically for my car, and would require shifting earlier and more often. Not to say that it isn't worth it, you can always swap in a better 6th gear if that's the only problem ($$$). If you can get it for cheap, I would consider it...

I believe the 6MT 1.8T code is "GJW".

This is surprising. Is the bellhousing the same between the two?

Why is it surprising? I could put a 1994 Audi 90 trans in an 06 A4 with the right parts. Almost all Audi transmissions work in any engine, you just need the other supporting parts. The bellhousing isn't the same but has the correct bolt holes.

I guess we just have different definitions of "bolt-in." If you have to change axles, flanges, linkages, shafts, etc, it's a little more work than just a straight swap.

they're all just taking out bolts and putting new ones in. There is not a single trans that you can "swap" and not change other things (linkage, axles, etc). So by your definition there are no bolt-in transmissions other than the one you have.

I might install the S4 trans when i go gt2871r upgrade. The stage 2 apr 1.8t might not be a good combination with the s4 trans.

Coming from other cars, yes it is surprising. Virtually any any Audi trans will bolt up to any Audi engine....which blew my mind too.

I have an 0A3 mated to my 1.8T, see the DIY. The ratios are certainly not optimal for DD (second is way too long....but hey you can do 70 in it), but for WOT runs you can't beat it.

Update: installed the B6 s4 03A trans into my 1.8t. Works pretty well and shifts smoother than the original 6speed. Just with apr stage 2.

Yes do tell please... This interests me very much. Also if you don't mind where'd you get the trans from and cost? An ad, junkyard, parts car?

The gearing feels like stock 6speed trans but smoother to shift. Sometimes its hard to go to first gear on the stock trans but with s4 trans its goes in first with out forcing it. Its doing 2100-2200 rpm on 60mph. Cant remember with the stock 6speed. Got the trans together with v8 engine. V8 overheated lost comp so went back to 1.8t and just used the s4 trans for the 1.8t.

My 02x does about 28-2900 at 80mph in 6th for a point of comparison.
