    audi speak/ terminology/ lingo ?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi everybody!

I apologize if this is a repost or dupe thread, but i havent seen one so here we go:

I am boldly going into german territory after driving almost exclusively acura and subaru for a decade, i am a car guy thru and thru, i did my own digging and research on the s4 before making a purchase, and got a good deal on a 2011 with 29k, 2nd owner, private seller etc. car met all of the criteria i look for...

car has all the goodies, sport diff, b&o, nav, black optics, quartz grey paint etc.

i have 10 months on factory warranty, highly doubt ill put 20 k on the clock before so im going with 4 years,im a little concerned about the tranny/mechatronic issues i have read about, and will probably purchase an aftermarket warranty. aywhoo

there seems to be all kinds of acronyms and lingo that is lost on me [ im a fast learner] but i was wondering if you guys could breakdown and explain the different audispeak in laymens terms...

    dsg
    td1
    b8
    b8.5

or redirect me to similar thread if one already exists, thanks in advance! cheers

Dsg = direct shift gearbox (dual clutch transmission)

Td1 = audis designation for a modified car. Usually will void your powertrain warranty if you get tagged with it.

    B8 = pre face lift

    B8.5 = post face lift

maybe i over thought the op but i feel like i read a lot of technical speak that is in acronyms or some kind of short speak, just trying to get the jist.

i wish i had more examples atm, i will look for more or maybe i just made an introduction thread masquerading as a dumb question?

acura/honda is one of the most dependable/durable cars on the market, not one has ever left me stranded anywhere, and while dependability isnt really sexy, the peace of mind is worth something, ive had 4 different tl sedans [97, 02 s type, 03 s type, 08 tl] and the blend of sport, luxury, fuel economy, was good enough for me, until i became obsessed with awd systems mostly because we got rid of a 4 wheel drive full size truck, and the winters in minnesota can get pretty ugly, since then ive been driving a 2011 subaru legacy 3.6r, and a 2013 infinti g37x...

getting rid of the subaru since i bought the s4 recently.

little things about the car are different so it takes some getting used to, but overall the audi is superior in most aspects. obviously

the subaru awd system is incredibly capable in the snow, i know quattro is good, but the bigger tires and wheels makes me think the traction might not be as good? granted i will have dedicated 18 inch winter tires and wheels vs stock 17 inch all seasons on the subaru...

the infiniti is fine, i suppose. its fast, the x drive is serviceable in winter/ rain but does not compare to the symettrical awd system in the subaru. my major complaint is that the vq engines just guzzle gas, but they are still fun to drive.

hoping to do a little better on fuel economy in the s4, i drive a lot of highway miles so wanting to get around 24-25mpg average overall?

Nice looking car, but good luck on seeing that mileage...you could get lucky. I know there are a few people that see closer to the rating of 27 for the car on the highway.

If that is your goal, you should have no problem getting those numbers on hwy. my overall average is 17.8 but I drive hard and a lot of city. On a recent trip to Chicago from Michigan I averaged over 26mpg on hwy (comfort and easy driving)

When it comes to an awd car their is nothing better than quattro. Slap some winter tires on it and you are golden. But if im on the hwy i get 28mpg with using cruise control and i have DSG. Was kind of nice when i tested it and see what i got and i was surprised.

I have a beater honda as well and when i mean beater i mean beater. its a 97 civic. I avg 25 26 mpg in that car. It still gets well over 30 mpg on the hwy with over 260k miles lol. It burns oil but who cares its a honda lol. Honestly honda interior sux compared to audi's I don't think i would ever buy a new honda over an audi unless i was broke. I want something that i can drive and enjoy and have some fun getting from A to B not some shit box that i don't care about thats just a car lol

I get 25-26mpg doing ~70 cruising on the highway pretty much every time I go on long drives.....even with all the mods listed in my signature.

If you bought this car for great highway mirage, you are going to be disappointed. But 24mpg at 65-70 mph is not unreasonable. BUT DON'T EXPECT MUCH BETTER. If you start cruising above 70mph, gas mileage will drop

I had a couple TLs before buying my S4. The S4 has proven to be just as reliable as either TL I had and has been a lot more fun to own. And with snow tires, the S4 is an absolute beast in the winter.

As for other terms I can think of:
    * VAG COM - VW/Audi connection to on board computer. With Ross Tech cable and a laptop, you can change some of the configurations of things on your car. (e.g. keep both LEDs on in front with turn signal, remove seat belt buzzer, play DVDs while driving, etc.)
    * BO - Bang & Olufsen premium audio...or Black Optics package (black grill instead of chrome/gray, black trim around doors, rotor rims)
    * Alu Kreuz - aftermarket stabilizer plate you install under your car to tighten up the steering feel
    * APR, AWE, Milltek, GIAC, Revo - Aftermarket companies offering tuning chips, exhausts, etc.
    * Sepang, Nogaro, Estoril - three shades of Audi blue paint
    '23 Audi RS5 SB - Sepang Blue | Black | full carbon

I use individual with steering and suspension on dynamic. and Motor and SD in comfort. My individual is used to try to get the best gas, but keep the "tight" feel. Otherwise I am just in Dynamic when normally driving.

i understand. let me be clear on one thing i did not buy the audi s4 for its all world fuel economy!

in that previous post i was basically referring to both the subaru which i average almost 24 mpg surprisingly, and the infiniti which i can barely squeeze 22 mpg out of city hwy combined...

i am already averaging almost 24 in the audi, but no real baseline yet as i have not even put 1k on the odometer, i imagine i will have a better idea of what i can expect after i put about 2-3k on the car in my normal work routine etc

if the audi doesnt do better than the g37 im gonna be majorly disappointed!

thanks everyone else for all of the tips on the "audispeak" im learning more and more everyday!

This is one car I specifically bought NOT for the gas mileage, it is just too much fun stomping on the gas.

That's what I have been seeing as well. Not sure what others are doing to get better than that unless they are driving at lower speeds, which I do not. Generally 10 mph over speed limit on highway. Sometimes more depending on location and conditions. V1 always!

well i have driven an a4 in the snow and it was very pleasant and capable, my concerns comes from the fact that the wheels and tires on the s models are very big and performance oriented, which generally leads to an overall decrease in inclement weather performance...

but i will have a dedicated set of wheels and tires for winter specifically.

My previous car was a g37xS before my S4 and I am getting a 3-4MPG difference even with spirited driving. Very happy with my mileage and congratulations! I also drive a 6MT whereas the g37xS was a 7AT. With DSG on highway at least you will get better MPG then a 6MT due to another overdrive gear
