Do you want the A4 to "be towed" or "do the towing"?

Hitches, are attached to the rear to allow the car to tow other things, while towbars are usually attached to the front to allow them to be towed (at least in the good ol' US of A that's how they are referred to). I assume you are looking for a hitch, as I could see there being a difference between the saloon/sedan and the avant/estate for placing a hitch in the rear, where the front mounting for a towbar should essentially be the same between the two body styles. I only mention this because the use of incorrect terminology or search terms may be why this has become a "nightmare" for you.

If you are looking for a hitch this thread has some nice images and helpful info:

Also, on a side note, with a thread titled "towbar nightmare" I expect to see a video of a towbar failing and a vehicle rolling down the freeway

I've put a bosal towbar with removable swan neck on my 3.0. just follow the instructions in the box.

    it's pretty easy:
    • remove rear bumper cover
    • remove 4 bolts that hold the (aluminum) bumper to the frame.
    • there are insulation blocks deep in the channels the bumper just came out of. these need to get out of the way for the tow bar. i tried to extricate, but ended up just bashing them further down to get the channel clear
    • install the towbar using the new bolts supplied
    • get a hacksaw, dremel, or some other plastic cutting tool and cut your bumper cover according to the template in the box
    • re-install the bumper cover
    • find a place to store your old aluminum bumper

as far as electrics go... i bought a touareg tow module, and wired it up. was a bit of a pain, one needs to tap into the canbus wiring, and run the canbus wires and power wires from the dash to the boot. I dropped the tow module under the side storage area, to keep it (mostly) out of harm's way.

They're exactly the same underneath so why would the saloon differ from the estate in that regard?
