Alert!
My 2013 A4 Quattro MMI recently gave me the message, "please drain oil". The oil level read full since last oil change, but does not reveal if overfilled. I have suspected it was overfilled. I began evacuating one half quart of oil at a time (over the course of a couple days), and getting readings. I also ordered a dipstick (after researching posts on this site), and I drained 1 3/4 quarts of oil out before the level on the MMI would begin to fall below the max line. Level was confirmed accurate with dipstick. I had noticed that the oil, with only 2,500 miles on it since dealer oil change, was coal black. I decided to do an oil change myself.
First. I filled oil back to full mark so I could see exactly how much of the 4.9 quart capacity I could evacuate through the plugged dipstick tube. I could only get 3 1/4 quarts out with oil hot and flexible tube. Then it all made sense to me. The dealer was only evacuating about 3 quarts of old oil out and without measuring how much was removed, they were adding 5 quarts, thus overfilling by nearly 2 quartz!!
I called my dealer and the service department confirmed that they don't measure what comes out because it goes into a drum. They then add 5 quarts, not knowing how overfilled it is. They agreed that this is probably what happened and is their procedure. Unbelievable!!!
They were also shocked that I discovered this. I asked if they can drain my oil by the drain plug next change and they said that would be the failsafe way to do it. I will insist on it from here out, and measure with the dipstick to double check them every time!
Heads up!! Ask your dealer if they are changing your oil like this, because I'll bet they are doing the same thing. No wonder there are so many oil burners out there. Because not only is there the overfilling problem, but the dirty oil is only half changed, still dirty and running 10,000 miles on it overfilled!
I'm still horrified over the whole thing and cannot believe this is Audi's process. Will be watching this close here on in. My car has only 12,000 miles on it to date and I am hoping no damage was done with the 2 quart overfill for 2,500 miles. Check it out and let us know how widespread this is please.
