Should I stay away from a 2012 TDI with 79k miles on the clock? It's for sale at an Audi dealer asking $39,990.

If well maintained, realistically how long should this engine last? What are some issues I should be aware of?

    I've never owned a diesel.

I would stay away, even if it is at an Audi dealership.

One that is a lot of miles for a 2012. Comparison, I only have 65k on my 2010.

Two, no factory or CPO warranty for a two year old vehicle....not good.

I have a 09 with 90ish on it bought it with 83k. I felt like diesel engines were just getting broken in around 100k :) I would think we should be able to run 200k to 300k on them with proper maintenance with out major issue.

Well, that's good to hear. I don't know much about diesels other than the fact they usually are very torquey and good on mpgs. I would most likely look into an aftermarket warranty plan. I've seen a few Q7s for sale that are 2012s with over 100k on them...can't believe some people drive that much in 2 years time. Guess it's mostly highway with very long job commutes.

An 09 with 83k on it is understandable, but a two year old vehicle with 79k on it is a lot! But, with that said, I can agree that the diesel engine feel very reliable. If you can, get all the service history on it.

i would work them down on the price and act like that mileage is a serious concern. in reality, that mileage shouldnt be a concern at all. 1) its a diesel and if properly maintained should go 500k miles with no problem. 2) the mileage is obviously all highway. theres no other way you could rack up so many miles on a car in under 2 years. i would actually be more suspicious of a high mileage 09 because you know less about what the miles were, e.g., dogging it around town vs. highway.

work them down on price and/or get them to throw in some sort of extended warranty coverage. not so much because of the mileage but because audis have gotten insanely expensive to maintain in general. i have spent more on repairs this year than i have on my car payment and I'm only at 60k miles : (

The great thing about a diesel is that engine will outlast the body by a longshot! I have a 2010 with 105K and she still runs like the day I picked it up with just normal care!

I have a 2009 with 102,000 soccer mom miles and it runs like a dream. We do all regular scheduled maintenance. Only issues that we have had were an Ad-Blue issue that was subject to a TSB and a problem with the rear latch ($1k later). Otherwise, the vehicle has been bulletproof, drives like a dream, and pulls as hard as it did since the first day we drove it off the lot.

so far out of the two incidents i read about... it was estimated by the dealer to be around $10-11k for fuel system failure.

FYI, I didn't buy this Q7. I want to hold out for the MY16...hopefully it will lure in my wife.

In my opinion, new vs old model with the same amount of miles, I would always take the newer one. 80k miles in 2 years, you know they are all highway miles. I would much rather have that than 80k local miles with the attendant cold startups and short durations.
