Hopefully just rear coolant flange....several threads on this. A royal PITA, but not a lot of $ if going DIY.

Not sure how to verify before you do the road trip.

I should be mean but here you go. I just did all the research on this today. I also made a video to show where it's at and what it looks like when it's leaking. Note you won't see a leak in the video just the residue from the after math.

That would be a fantastic idea. We can have a library of videos showing part locations. I know a lot of customers of ours sometimes have a hard time looking at diagrams so having a video showing exactly where the location is and what it looks like can be very beneficial to the community .

I just removed the cam chain housing yesterday, really isn't that bad. Just a bunch of small jobs and you need a right angle driver. Remove vacuum pump, then hpfp, then undo the 8 bolts to the cover and boom.

If your good you don't have to remove the vacuum pump. twist the cam chain housing up, rotate towards the driver side and pull straight up comes right out all in tact. Install is same in reverse.

Don't have one nor was I able to find one anywhere. I am going to sears in the morning to get a triple square bit set. Well that's at least the plan. Doesn't seem like anyone cares it in stock.

Looking at your video I can plainly see the 8mm triple square. The passenger side is the easy one, it's the driver sides that one people say is a byotch. Take a look at mcpcartier's picture and you'll see what I mean.

    Taken from thread http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...ment-with-Pics

I'm thinking it might easiest to cut the shank off the 8mm tripple bit and taping it to a small box end wrench.

So you think its a 8mm triple square bit. I am just going yo buy a whole set tomorrow. Looking at mcpcartier's diy he lossens another triple square bit to make more room.

The driver side while be a nightmare. But once I get the bits I will video tape it all and do it the hard way without removing all the extra stuff.

You're a brave man not removing anything else out of the way. Something like this may help, but you may have to cut the bit shorter.

I should rephrase that, I did remove the coolant reservoir. That's not a bad idea but I think I'm going to pickup something like fraggy posted. That way I can just ratchet and I have some extensions that should work with it.

8mm triple square???? The only triple square on this engine is the fuel line to coolant line bolt. Everything else is t-30, 10mm, 13mm, 16mm, and Allen 6.
Doing the rear coolant flange isn't terribly hard. Get a socket less ratcheting wrench, the kind you stick a drill bit into, then get a drill but extender, the kind you use for wood assembly, then a t30 drill bit. Remove from the head, use a remote hose clamp puller to get all hose clamps loose and replace. Easy cheesy

Have Martin it is a M8 Triple square bit.

I have it almost all done now. I see t way to much time on it though. All due to the parts store selling me the return radiator hose and not the supply hose like I needed.

Short story the supply line was melted on the coolant flange and there was a large whole in it also.

Should have it all fixed up tomorrow once I get the supply hose.

Yeah I wasn't to happy with all the added failures. Here are the pics.

The scrape marks on the coolant flange are from vice grips. Even though it was already busted on the hose. I figured I would try and see if I could get it off. Much to my surprise it was melted on there good. So I had to buy a new supply hose no matter what.

Comparison of incorrect hoses. Top is the original that I had to cut out.

Yikes! Did you have a slow leak of coolant overtime? Thnx for posting the pic guess those hoses are another failure point to check.

No it was a sudden big leak. So it could have been the hose. Though I think I may have had a slow leak from the coolant flange.

I did notice coolant smell once and awhile but never found the source and it was so light I thought maybe I was just going crazy.

Oh yeah, I would definitely add that on the list of maintenance items. Just make sure you have a M8 Triple Square Bit. A small ratchet bit driver.

I bought this one. The top ratchet. Made get the bolts out I two second job.

Just had the same situation- what a PITA- took me about 8hrs- I would rather do a timing belt in the A4- lost a torx bit along the way- while i was at it I replaced the heater core hoses and the temp sensor just so I don't have to do it again- also did cam follower while i had the HPFP out- and removing the air box was a definite help- My flange looks like a double of yours, deteriated in the same spot-

Strange I thought I responded to your post.

That's crazy that your's looks the same as mine. From what I have read it's a pretty common failure item for our cars. I replaced everything except the return line for the heater core as that's easy to get to and didn't need changing right now.

I did however get my new supply hose for the heater core. I'll be leaving work early to get my car finally back on the road.
