Cool Matte Volcano Red - plastidipped my car again in a satin metallic red

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hey guys, so I plasti dipped my car again this past week, finally starting a proper thread now with pics and everything. Here's my previous thread from last time, I did it in a matte metallic gray: http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...d-my-whole-car.

A lot of your questions on the dip is probably already answered in that thread. So last time I went for something close to a matte version of Audi's Daytona Grey, which was my main inspiration last time, and this time I'd say it's probably closest to a Audi's Volcano Red color (http://i.imgur.com/9nd4OA3.jpg). I originally planned to do it in a deeper, darker red, but ended up going with this instead and I actually am liking it much better, much more of a unique red and it really stands out even among other red cars.

This isn't like the normal plasti dip finishes you might see, I'm not a big fan of the fully flat/matte colors on a full car, looks a bit dull IMO. But this color has a lot of range to it since I used a mixture of a few different red pearls and flakes, and also mixed in some plasti dip gloss for a nice satin metallic effect. It came out very nice and smooth and you would think it's vinyl the way it looks and shines.

For the most part it's like a red with a bit of an orange hue to it, in the darker shades it looks like a darker red sort of with a burnt orange look to it, sometimes even a slight pink-ish hue to it. In the direct sun it really pops and has a more orange-ish look to the red, and in the dark it goes from a red aluminum type look, and sometimes to this red-ish copper/rose gold type look, just depending on the lighting.

But I'm really happy with the color and already getting a lot of compliments and looks. Hopefully the pics below show all the different shades, I tried to takes pics in as many diff lighting situations as I could, but even then the pictures don't really show it off as well and it definitely pops more in person. You can see below in the daytime pics how it's bright, but in the more overcast pics it's darker, the car wash pics below you can see how in the low light it has this nice satin red look to it, and in one of the last pics how it looks in the same spot but with different lighting as the sun went down. Let me know what you guys think!

    - Roof, I left in the factory black paint
    - Wheels and side mirrors are also plastidipped, in a custom glossy gunmetal type color
    - Front splitter is wrapped in a matte aluminum vinyl, but I'll soon be re-wrapping that in a black chrome vinyl
    - Front grille bar is in a matte grey, but I'll be re-doing that in a satin/glossy black soon, along with gloss black fog grilles
    - I'll be putting a very light smoke tint film over the headlights and taillights soon, nothing too dark though just the lightest tint I can get
    - Will be installing coilovers and adding 15mm spacers to the rear wheels next week

Looks awesome I have been looking into dipping mine in the future. I'm guessing your using a spray gun instead of spray cans given the quality of this job.

thanks! lol yeah i loved the grey originally and wasn't so sure about changing it, but now im liking this better than the grey overall, grey was a bit more low-key, this thing just pops everywhere

haha im sure theyre prob wondering wth im doing lol. and i havent really done this for anyone yet, i think i'd wanna maybe practice on a few more cars just to get a bit more experience before i do it for $ for others, but im thinking definitely in the near future.

and yeah i used the gallons and the proper spray gun, no way it comes out looking good at all with just cans lol, would look like shit that way.

and yeah the hood is a bit streaky, it was getting dark by the time i was finishing up, and i was gonna go back do a last coat on the hood soon to even it out, but its not really too noticeable so i havent really been bothered by it too much, but i'll be touching it up soon.

Looks really good I'm familiar with DYC are you just mixing additives (pearls, flakes, etc) into a gallon and experimenting with the end result? I have often thought about trying this out to see what kind of crazy color ranges would pop

yeah this is with clear plasti dip, and i just mixed in a variety of red pearls into it to get the color and sprayed right over my previous grey dip. the color possibilities are endless really, whatever you can mix up to get the color and shade you want when using pearls and flakes.

and yeah the wheels along with the side mirrors are dipped as well, for a gunmetal/smoked silver type color

nope all the door and trunk jambs are in the original gloss black paint, i like the contrast it adds actually, goes nicely with any color i could do on it. and its a pain to go ahead and tape off the interior and all that and do the insides as well, so its much easier to just leave it and also looks better IMO, good thing about having a black car lol :D

lol hmm we can probably work something out, what color is your car and what color did you plan to do it in?

thanks guys, yup cant wait to get the coils installed and the spacers added, but i'll probably still be keeping it at a similar ride height, dont wanna go too low or tucked or anything, just flush. can't risk anything here on these NYC roads lol. here's a few more pics i took yesterday, these are straight off my phone and no edits (last pic just has a slight contrast correction to it), so you can see how the color shows.

sprayed over my previous grey, couldnt be bothered to peel it all and also last time i did 2 gallons on the car, and i just did 2 gallons of the red now. 2 gal alone isnt thick enough to peel easily, so now i have a total of 4 gallons worth of coats and have a thick durable coat to peel much more easily if i needed to.

and i sprayed it right outside on my lawn, i was planning to set up like a portable canopy/makeshift paint booth thing around it, but ended up just going for it like this to save time, and there was supposed to be a thunderstorm that night, so i wanted to rush it and get it done so i have a few hours to dry out before the rain started, and it did rain heavy that night, i was worried a bit but it didnt mess up the dip after it dried out so that was good. its much much better to do indoors though as you dont have to worry about the wind blowing and messing up the spray pattern, no dust and crap flying onto the wet paint, etc. but i've done both my previous dips in the same spot outdoors and thankfully it's come out ok.

Has anyone tested long term on fully dipped cars? Like for example, baking in the California sun for a year, if it affects the paint underneath? The more I see these threads makes me want to play with colors! Awesome stuff Liquid Smoke!

thanks! fwiw, the dip itself doesnt melt or anything like that in the heat, and it can withstand a lot of heat, people do their exhaust tips with it and sometimes engine bay. the heat can make it a bit more harder though when it comes time to peel, but its not really a big deal as long as you have a good thick coat. as for the paint underneath, i havent heard of anyone with that issue, only time i've heard of issues is over white paint, where it sort of leaves a stain, but its easily removed with a clay bar and also just by letting it sit for a few days and the stain goes away on its own.

and also on non OEM clear coats, where the clearcoat is different from factory and probably a bit inferior, or when the clearcoat hasnt been properly cured (not recommended on a brand new car until after 5-6 months or so, then there are sometimes issues with the staining as well or slight hazing on the clear.

My daily driver's paint has gone to shit and I've been patiently waiting to re-paint the whole car. Dipping it has crossed my mind here and there but I never really truly considered it until this thread. That looks fantastic, great work.

thank you. and yeah dip isn't bad, you can always give it a shot and if it doesnt turn out well it's not like your current paint is good anyway, if you'll eventually try a body shop or something then i'd say dip is probably worth a try first, even if something temporary until you eventually actually repaint.

here are a few more pics, i hope this shows off the color range well in the lighting, but i think i kinda created my own subtle chameleon/color flip type finish. i did use like 3-4 different shades of red pearl and i didnt mix them all in at the same time, i had darker ones on the base and the more brighter in the top coats, so i think that layering of the pearls gave it this very subtle color flip type effect, you can just notice it a bit depending on the lighting, but it's like this deep rose red in the shade, then a brighter red/orange in the sun, and then in that one closeup you can see a bit of transition from a pink-ish to a more orange color. im gonna try to post a walkaround video soon to show off how it looks closer to in person.

^^ thanks! and nice, looking forward to that. my plan for like next year or sometime after the red was for a nice satin black, and i was going to use some of the nighthawk in there as well. but do post pics once you do it.

here's a few more pics, im still taking cell phone pics so ive not been really able to get some nice quality pictures that actually captures the look well, but it just looks more metallic in person and has this range of shine to it, but these pics are pretty close and you can see the lighting. my favorite is that last night shot, was just taking random pics but this one was right under some lights and it came out looking real nice. no filters on these, just straight cell phone pics. also got my rear spacers on and tinted the headlights since last time.

love how this pic came out, this is unedited just off my phone, but you can see the color shift from left to right. at night, in the dark it's that deep dark red look and the side with the light shining it has that burnt orange type shade to it.

Very nice. Just got my A4 dipped to the same color you had previously. If you did it yourself, how many coats were required over the previous layer of dip? I'm already thinking about what color to do next. I'm thinking maybe a balloon white.

thanks, and yup i did it myself. i used 2 gallons over my previous dip, which was enough for coverage and it layered on to the previous one so the total coat is good and thick enough. 1 gallon would not have been enough and it would look uneven overall and a darker red too. and balloon white is definitely nice, has that nice pearl look to it. i'd do white myself if it wasnt a pain to keep clean, id imagine dirt mid etc would easily stick to and show on the matte white.

Looks awesome! Curious how you did the door handles. Did you take them apart or spray them while still on the car? Did the dip effect the movement of the handles at all?

    Very tempted to do this.

i just left the door handles as is, no masking or no taking apart or anything. the only thing is it's harder to get a thick coat on the inside of the handles, so i didnt pay much attention to the inside of the handle, and afterwards i just rubbed off the inside so its back to the stock black paint on the inner handle, just easier this way since over time i dont have to worry about it rubbing off the handles, and also since my original color is black the inside of the handle doesnt really stick out or anything and even if it was visible it wouldnt look so bad.

^^ looks real good, the all black RS grille goes very nicely with it. i'm actually planning to do like a satin metallic black whenever i do my car again prob next year.

also here's some more pics from the past few weeks, got a few good ones with a DSLR at the beach one weekend. havent updated this thread in awhile, but i did a light smoke tint on the headlights and taillights and also got a quad exhaust (still need to paint the diffuser, planning on doing it in matte black with that middle 'blade' type piece in a gunmetal maybe, similar to the RS5's style)
