i think they are all the same, iv only ever had 2 97s and one has Bose and the other was Concert with Nokia speakers. iv had earbuds that sounded better than the concert but the Bose is the best stereo i have ever owned.

I'm sorry, but you must not have had many stereos... don't get me wrong, the Bose is very good... for 15 years ago.

Its better than my buddys 2010 toyota yaris and my neighbors 08 mustang GT before he dumped 2k is speakers and amps. it doesnt come close to my dads MK5 golf, however. I know there will always be a better but for a stock 17 year old system, its pretty dang good. and coming from the audi delta, it sounds like gold. this is the third car iv ever owned and the first one didn't even have a stereo.

I believe there are two different Bose speaker set-ups, an early or late but I don't remember the split on them for the year. I had on of the woofers go out on mine and it was $200 and something for a 2000 model year car. I was rocking a Phatnoise set-up that I hacked with a 40 gig hard drive and it worked okay unless it was cold then it didn't work. It's kind of messed but but it did the trick with the stock deck and speakers. I later upgraded it to some thing I bought from ECS that allows Bluetooth, USB, and media players that plugs into the CD changer harness. Personally the sound mine makes is good enough for me and I can't find any issues with it. I know there is better but I don't want to do the work to convert it when the stock system sounds good.

Yeah, for a factory system the Bose is pretty good. The speakers are cheap paper cone things. I think the magic is in the Bose amp (software). The response is tuned pretty well for the factory speakers. Bose has the science to make things sound "good" to human ears. Simplistically, they know which frequencies humans associate with "quality" (ie: "gold"), and they boost those.

The entire system lacks in the low end department, though. But that's expected from a stock system.

The PO had installed an 8in JBL sub in the trunk. sounds good but makes the cd changer useless.

I dont think that 8in JBL made the cd changer useless, mp3 files, usb ports, aux ports etc make cd's useless. I mean come on, its 2014..lol...cd's are obsolete and kind of foolish any more...

I think he means that the bass makes it so the cds skip constantly. I had that issue.

There's a couple of those on ebay, but if you don't want to spend the $30-$60 you can always do this: http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...ony-or-Concert

If you want to retain the Bose you can upgrade to the d2 s8 amp. It's 4x stock I believe. Plug and play. I've replaced everything with 2 ohm infinitys and it sounds decent. Never going to get much out of a door card mounted speaker.

Bose is like 2.7 ohm btw

i think the amp was modified before. there are some sort of what appear to be crimped wires coming out of the back of the amp and disappearing into the trunk trim, might be the signal wires for the Sub box, not sure. the engine starting to smoke so figuring out whats going on back there is pretty far down the list of things to do on my car, just wanna replace the speaker and be done with it. and these are the rear deck speakers, not the door card. i have some adaptor rings from my old audi to fit bigger speakers in the doors somewhere in a box, just haven't messed with it.

The two speakers on the rear deck of my 2000 with Bose are woofers if it matters to you.

Do yourself a favor and replace that 15 year old tech with something better. 120 a pair may seem reasonable but when you can get so much more for the same price why go with bose?

2ohm. Just do it one pair at a time. Also look into the s8 amp like I said. Aftermarket speakers like infinity like power.

i think i found some polk audio component speakers that will work well with the stock system. they are mids but the aftermarket woofer in the trunk handles the lows. thanks a bunch guys

I would normally agree with this but that isn't how it works with speakers, there are speaker sets from the 70's that easily match ultra high-end speakers from today.

That said, the Bose ones are up to $60 each. And that's a bit rich for a basic speaker. (Even for a Bose)
