Tinted license plate cover. Yay or nay?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So I just put this tinted license plate cover on my S4 this morning. I was kinda worried about the cops giving me a hard time about it but I figured I'd be ok as you can still cleary read the plate numbers. I left my house for work and had the great luck of having a cop end up right behind literally 2 minutes later! He pulls me over and immediately brings up the license plate. I played dumb and said I wasnt aware. Luckily a lot of cops come into my job so I name dropped my job and I made up a story that another officer told me I would be fine. Also that I was worried about someone stealing my tags. He ran my drivers license and then told me hes not going to give me a ticket but I should be aware that if a cop feels like pulling me over he always can for that. He never asked me to remove it though. I already dont have a front plate (also illegal) so I kind of feel like maybe I should just take it off. Anyways I thought I'd post pics and get opinions if its even worth the hassle so heres a couple. <br/>

Not sure I understand what is the point of keeping it on to begin with? Like what does it do, can they not get you with speed/red light cameras, or do you just like how it looks?

I would take it off - not worth the hassle of dealing with cops, etc. IMO.

Just prevents registration tag theft and for looks. These photos were taken under direct sunlight so its hard to see the effect. My tail lights are also tinted but you can barely notice in these pics.

I think he means just the registration sticker... You can't just peel it off with the cover on.

I guess but it might encourage the thief to use a screwdriver and just take the whole tag.

Yeah but its kinda like having a dog. Of course someone could hurt/kill your dog but most people would just move on to another just to not have to deal with it.

Seems like a stretch analogy but ok.

I guess renewal sticker theft must be a big problem where you live or work?

If it is a reason to pull you over, just not sure I see the cost:benefit.

I'm really digging these but paying my registration fees are painful enough as is... I wonder is i just paint mine if the cops would be able to notice.

haha. I'm def not the DIY type. It took me over 2 hours just to put on the Roc-Euro. My "DIY black lic mod" would look like something a kindergardener did (no offense to kindergardeners) Anyways i'm keeping the lic plate cover for the weekend. I figure theres going to be cops everywhere so this will be a good test. I'll stay away from enjoying any adult beverages before driving as a precaution and see how it goes. I really like it but if i get pulled over again this weekend then its coming off. Its not often that i end up with a cop directly behind me so i'm going to test my luck.

I ran a dark gray one over my front plate on both my black cars. Really helped hid some of the ugliness of a big white CA plate in the center of the grille. Said screw it and went plateless this time though.

I see a lot of really dark plate covers too...I saw one the other day that you couldn't read from 5-10 feet away.

On a side note, you may want to consider relocating if you need to worry about someone stealing your registration tag

^agreed. This is no where near what I would consider a dark or tinted cover. I was expecting to not be able to read your plate. I've seen a few people here with such dark covers you can never read their plates. It's great for traffic cameras.

This is a complete joke and waste of time in my opinion. If cops pull over for this, they need something better to do.

Unless California is behind the times in what they print the tags on, it's nearly impossible to peel those off now without damage and or stretching them out. I peel mine off each year and each year I have to come up with new ways to do it cleanly since they keep making them thinner and thinner. It's harder to steal them if you don't layer them on top of the old one each year.
