    Power steering whine after replacement

A few months ago I had my powersteering pump and rack replaced. Yet since then there has been a TERRIBLE whine that is slight when I dont touch the steering wheel yet as soon as I barely touch it the whine becomes horrendous. Our mechanic used aftermarket parts so is this normal an I just have to deal with it(his girlfriend that works with him said we basically just have to deal with it). I never had any noise even when my powersteering was shot, the steering works fine besides the whine and the wheel wasnt lined up at the exact perfect position(its off by maybe a few degrees). Could it be something else related to the steering? And since the powersteering requires a bit of labor to get to is there anything I can tell my mexhanic to look for or do myself to try to solve the whine? Its really damn annoying and kind of embarressing, especially considering it cost 2.5k and isnt how I expected. Thanks

Check your power steering fluid reservoir when the car is running and making this whine. If you see bubbles or a slight foaming, that means it either wasn't flushed and bled properly or there is a leak in one of the hoses that is allowing air into the system.

^^ This. It sounds like you still have air in the system. Take it back to your mechanic and tell him to bleed the system. After he or she bleeds it properly, the whine may continue for a bit. But within ten or so miles of driving the rest of the air should disappear.

There is a proper procedure when you refill the system. I actually remember turning my car from ful lock left to full lock right like 10 cycles with the engine off. Then check level, replace cap, turn car on and cycle from lock to lock like 5 times. Then repeat once for good measure and check the fluid level.

Get a new mechanic and stop wasting your time with the idiot and his girlfriend.

Here this is actually a DIY I used in conjunction with the Bentley manual. It's an A4, but same process. Don't worry about the flushing, just focus on the filling and bleeding instructions

Also FYI, driving with air in the system is a great way to burn up you power steering pump and that would BLOW.
