2004+ A8 - when did Audi use a timing chain rather than a timing belt?

    Hi...

What year did audi start using a timing chain in the D3 A8 long or short wheelbase (if it matters)? Is water pump and thermostat still an issue that needs attention at 80k miles if it has the chain rather than the belt?

    Thanks!

The 2007 engine labeled as the FSI on the top engine cover identifies the engine with the timing chain. Since you are not removing the front of the engine to replace a timing belt on a FSI, I would say the water pump is a "replace as needed" repair whereas on the timing belt engine is a "while you are in there" replacement. Same with the thermostat. On the FSI, keep your coolant fresh and it will help provide longevity for the waterpump.

    Thank you!

Anything else I should be concerned about when buying a 2007+ A8, other than the MMI screen and the adjustable air suspension working properly?

On the 07 I just purchased, the dealer had to replace the steering column and module that failed. The keyless entry and keyless start failed to operate and that was $$$$. Also did a headlight bulb and igniter for the headlight and that was fairly pricey. Also,, they replaced both front window regulators. Later, I had a few maintenance things done so I knew they were complete. Dealer told me I needed an engine mount and sway bar bushings but I'll do that at my next oil change so I can save up for them. I love the car but think I would not get one with the 20" wheel package again as roadnoise is more pronounced with the large dubs.
