So my 04' 3.0L actually does have this, I just couldn't see it because the interior lighting was on the dimmest setting (adjusted via +/- on left instrument cluster buttons).

    Will take pics.

For those of you who don't have it (if you didn't just overlook it like I did), I guess this means it can be retro-fitted...somehow...

Pic of them on in my 04':

The strip is only visible (as shown in above pic) if I take the picture from below. From a normal occupant perspective, there's only the faintest glow onto the door handle (like shown above). I think it might look better if it was brighter.

When pressing the "+" button on the cluster, all of the interior lights increase in brightness. While everything gets super bright at max setting (distracting during night driving IMO), the door handle lights increase in brightness marginally. I wonder if the door lights can be made brighter, without also increasing the brightness of the rest of the interior (personal preference).

I'm not sure if it's powered by LED(s) or incandescent bulb. The following picture is the reverse side of it:

Like said above, mine gives off the faintest glow at max (+) setting. Nowhere near blinding when dark out IMO. I almost have to put my head to the door handle to see it. Maybe they are bulb-powered and my bulbs are dying? - (if that's even possible, I always thought bulbs either do or don't work, and there is no dimming in between to signify pending failure, except for HID headlight projector bulbs which dim and get blue over time)

Wow my car has this as well, I learned something new about my car today Which is an '02 1.8.

The lights are veeeeery faint, only lighting up like a millimeter of the top ridge of the door handle. Just enough to help locate the handle when it's dark. And they do change with the +/- buttons.

I had seen that little bit of red light before, but I always thought it was just a reflection of all the other red ambient light that our cars have in the cabin.

    Cool thing to know

I have them too, 04 USP Avant. As stated above, you don't notice the light at all, it's when you you put your hand in the recess that you seethe red glow on your fingertips. Same as the red lights in your overhead console by the sunroof switch. They shine down onto your center console but it's so faint that you only realize they're there after you block the light with your fingers.

see, my center console ones are very bright. Ideally, my door lights would match my over heads.

    Reviving this post :
I have a B8.5 and the stock light you cant barely see it so I instead modified it with a red 3mm led bulb and now you can definitely tell . I'm very satisfied with the results and its really inexpensive and not hard to do.20191204_220508.jpeg20191204_220526.jpeg20191204_220515.jpeg20191204_220535.jpeg20191204_220540.jpeg20191204_161720.jpeg

How’d you get the bulb out of the OEM LIGHTING MECHANISM

I took of the door panel and got access to the lighting mechanism but there doesn’t seem to be a way to remove the bulb inside? It’s stuck in the clear plastic piece and connected to the black piece with the yellow box on the end housing the wires. Would you mind telling me how you got the old bulb out to put the new one in the clear plastic projecting mechanism? I’d really appreciate it as I have the door Panel already off the car. I purchased a 3mm red led with a resister for the replacement.

If my mind recollects , in order to remove the oem bulb , you have to pull the whole plastic clear housing where the bulb goes . Then cut the oem wires and soldered it to the 3mm led bulb . Also the plastic grommet that comes with the 3mm bulb, I reversed it and drilled the hole bigger with a drill bit so the 3mm bulb will fit properly, see photos

No problem! Once you figure it out and do one side , the other side its a breeze . And the results are impressive, the way it should've came from manufacture. Good luck
