request for instructions/info sunshade replacement Q5

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Dear AudiQ5driver,

I bought an amazon sunshade and it just arrived. My son and I are about to tackle this replacement. Could you please share with me any instructions you have for this? There are a couple of very vague youtube videos that say you don't have to drop the headliner in it's entirety, so may try that first. Also what bit size did you need to remove screws etc, I've seen differing options. We have a 2010 q5, and my kiddo is moving with his car to LA in the next few weeks so not having the sunshade isn't an option. Also, we are broke after paying for college so I am really hoping that we can do this on our own. Any info or directions that you have would be so very helpful and appreciated!
    Thank you,
    Jodie aka JodieAudi

My guess is that the metal bands are not fed thru the end caps of the housing properly. I'm pretty sure they curled and shifted as I was putting the housing in.

So back to the drawing board. Do any of you know a way to secure the metal bands to the housing so they don't curl up and pop out of the end caps? Any suggestions would be great! Thanks.
I did this last year. I don't remember the procedure but I know it took a good dozen tries (and a couple "backup and start overs") to get the new shade installed. The guys telling you it is easy....

Hi Jackie, yes, my old sunshade was damaged. The sunshade fabric disconnected from the metal spring band that moves the sunshade. It became worse over time, every time I opened and closed it. I had to order a new sunshade. I can email you my instruction, send me your email address. The instruction worked fine for Scott who posted above.
    Thanks!

It came with the 2 plastic catches that connect the front aluminum profile of the sunshade to its drive. I did not need the sunshade housing, that was not damaged and did not need replacement. I was able to replace the sunshade last weekend.

The tricky part for me was to put the new sunshade back into the car because the metallic spring bands want to pull the shade back into its housing, and because with the new sunshade I got, the interface between the plastic catch and the sunshade had changed which makes it hard for repair. I found a way around both issues, and created a step by step instruction how to do the replacement. Unfortunately, I couldn't upload the document here.

Contact me if you are interested!
I'd definitely love a little help on some of this. I'm not sure how to remove the rear pillars at this point. Keeping them in place seems like it'll be tough to reach everything without harming the headliner. If someone has advice on this I'd appreciate it!

I just got my replacement in the mail and plan of tackling this during the weekend. I see that the back portion of the glass is in place. I found another post indicating that the guides can be taken off intact if the fixed pano glass is removed (only 4 T20 screws). How did you remove the guides and finish the job?

My sunroof started making a grinding sound when attempting to close the sunshade. I immediately released the button. I’m assuming this means there’s a problem with the roller even though the fabric is still attached and I’ll have to take the headliner out to do a diagnosis. Have others had this same symptom?

Does anyone have the instructions from AudiQ5Driver that they could share? Sent him a message but haven't heard back. Any help is much appreciated, not going to give Audi 3k to replace and I'm a bit intimidated by the job.

    Documents

    Hi Everyone:

Here is a link to my google drive, with a bunch of material on how to fix this issues. Q5 2010 Sunshade Replacement.pdf is the detailed instructions.

    https://drive.google.com/drive/folde...cJ?usp=sharing

FYI, Audizine doesn't accept .pdf uploads, even though it says it does. Thus, the drive share.

    Good luck...

Hi JackieOQ5: did you ever fix your sunshade issue? I have the exact same problem. Based on the thread, it sounds like everyone else has something more serious (what 'metal piece'? are they all on about?). I can't tell if I just need to somehow tuck it back in, or if the whole thing needs to be dismantled. Thanks for any help or advice you can give!

Thank you very much for the instructions given for replacing the sun blinds, and also for the additional tips that helped me a lot.
I managed to replace the blinds thanks to you in just a few hours. Thanks a lot again.

i opened the rear pillar, and dropped coat hangers, but don't have enough space to get between the roof and the liner to get to the sunshade motor at all.

how to replace sunshade for panoramic sunroof?

Hey, I am attempting to replace my sunshade now. My shade guide will not retract to the rear anymore. This is preventing me from completing the replacement. Is there a way for me to manually retract the shade bow?

    **update**
IF your sun shade is bound up and off the track and/or off the roller…DO NOT cut it, then extend the shade. Retract it to the rear and ensure it’s out the track.

My shade came out of the track on the left side, the metal edge was coiled up. I cut the fabric so I could move the front shade bow out the way.

When I pulled out the metal case, I discovered that the shade fabric and it’s metal band was off the roller. The metal band creates tension to allow the fabric to retract onto the roll (that’s what the mechanic explained to me).

I took my Q5 to a local shop and this is what they think happened based on what they inspected.

The metal band got stuck in the track since when I moved the shade bow to the front of the vehicle. The complete sunroof assembly has to be removed to get access to the track and remove the steel band.

I have an appointment to get an estimate tomorrow.

Just buy the blind and not the blind and housing. They come in beige or grey. It comes with the two plastic clips. Once you have the two plastic clips you need to pry back the centre piece of plastic that holds the metal piece in place to allow the metal piece to come out.
Once they are out of the two plastic pieces you have to connect these two metal pieces to the blind metal strip into the slots. Once they are both attached to the blind ends then place the blind back into the old housing and replace it on a slight angle so that you can pull the metal blind strip forward towards the rail. Thred it into the rail up level with the drive piece (Blue Plastic) Then push the other side forward without moving back the side you have threaded. Thread the other side and then you have to slide on the aluminium guide bar.
Then get the two plastic guide pieces and clip them over the metal piece and the blue plastic guide. They should lock in level. Push the plastic notch back into the metal piece to lock it in place. I tried pushing the plastic pieces and attached metal into the rail but the blind went forward once then separated and didn't retract. So you have to separate the metal pieces from the plastic clip first and secure them to the blind properly.

I did this job for the first time only yesterday. I bought a new fabric from Amazon and I followed a youtube video that shows every step in a very clear and concise way. I watched a few other videos and the explanations were very lacking compared to this video. It has one major point to focus on and that is how the metal tape needs to be fed into the rail channel to make sure the cloth is tensioned across the frame. The other videos I watched didn't cover this and one of them showed you how much of a fail it was.....

So watch this video a few times and give it ago

Yeah sure, but I needed a black shade so I ordered just the "single cloth black" option. Don't order the full kit as you don't need it. The full kit includes the tray that the cloth sits in and that tray doest wear out so just swap the cloth out like the video shows.
