Question how to replace sunshade for panoramic sunroof?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    My sunshade bunched up

and the sides have torn from the coil thing

It's totally broken. Does anyone have a DIY or those exploded view drawings/instructions on how to gain access.

I figure I will first need to take off the roof liner, which I'm guessing involves taking off other trim first but I'm not sure?
    thanks

My Sunshade on my 2010 Q5 did the exact same thing this past weekend. It started when I opened the sun roof slightly the fabric started to ruffle in the wind and the one side
came out of the track. Then I opened the sun shade and it got all bunched up. Today I had to remove it. I would like to replace it. I would also like to get the sun roof removal instructions from spijun.

For a temp fix I am going to use "corex" sign plastic covered in fabric and adhere it to the sun roof with Velcro.

SPIJUN can you email me the sun roof removal instructions? Thanks, Tom

    Hey,
Just wondering how you ended up fixing this. My son pressed his head against the roof and snapped mine off on one side, what a joke that this is such an expensive thing to replace

No luck on this one yet. I even tried to download and install the ELSAWIN program to get the expanded drawings/instructions but couldn't get it working.
The dealership is quoting me $493 for the sunshade (1K9-877-307-A-T38), and $155 for the bracing (1K9-898-921) plus some rivets. But, the real kicker is labor; quoting me $900 because of the lengthy process to remove the headliner. What a rip off. If anyone has the instructions it would sure be useful.

I ended up just cutting those copper bands to take the sunshade out. Once they were cut, open the sunroof and then slide it forward until you can access it from above. Then you can slide out the fabric sunshade from the bracing. After looking at the diagrams and parts list here (http://www.jimellisaudiparts.com/sho...ssembly=753224) I don't think I actually need the bracing (part 26 in the drawing) as mine is undamaged. I do need the full sunshade housing and those are going for about $300 online depending on the color.

Hi, I was able to figure out how to remove the roof liner and the sunshade. I was able to save the sunshade only that I am now trying to figure out how to re-glue the fabric to the metal strips. I'm just still wondering if is worth the hassle or if is even possible to sucessfuly accomplish it.

Removing the headliner took me abou 2 hours but I basically went for it blindsided. If anybody needs guidedance I can explain by phone and then that person could post it for the rest.

    Let me know.

I just finished this job this past weekend.

First off I got a good laugh at the dealer. The car came with a third party warranty, and like a rookie I assumed it would cover the sunshade, nope. So i drop it off at the dealer who charged me $170 to look at it and then tell me that they wanted $1500 in labor plus $400 in parts. $1900. Yeah thats reasonable.

So i ordered the part, think it came out to $310, and i received the black metal case where the sunshade rolls into and the sunshade, but you should never have to replace the metal case, you should just order the sunshade instead.

Anyway So i take my car from the dealer, let me tell you this job is cake.

The headliner does not have to be removed. You simply have to loosen it in the rear. So pull out the plastic center piece that covers the end of the headliner in the trunk, then there is a button in the center that holds the headliner into the rear section of the car, Just use a flathead to push in the tabs on each side and pull down. next you need to release the two side pillars on the very rear, remove the coat hanger on each side and then pull the pillar back and it will pop out.

Next you need a t20, pull down the head liner, should be loose enough now, find the two t20 screws that hold in the sunshade metal housing, boom its out.

Now to remove the sunshade fabric, hop into the drivers seat, retract the sunroof glass and then turn the knob a little more, this will push the glass into service mode. There are 2 t20's that need to be removed here one on each front corner of the rear glass panel. Remove those. Note that between teh chassis and the glass there is a pair of spacer washers, don't lose those in a second. Ok now go inside of the car, into the rear seat, grab a flathead and find the rubber lining that goes next to the rear glass panel. Run the flathead through the sides of that panel in the rubber gasket, and you will find that behind the gasket there are two notches for two more t20's on each side of the glass, remove those. Cool, now push back the front glass into its regular position, and pop out the rear glass. put the rear glass on a towel or something soft. move the sunshade all the way to the rear position so it is at the far back, now you will find two t20's at the rear of the place where the glass panel used to be, remove those, and then right next to those screws are a set of tabs, pry them outward and up with a flathead or pick, and you will now see that you can remove the metal bar that pulls and pushes the sunshade fabrick. Remove the two grey tabs on each side and then simply slide the bar off of the fabric.

Took me 2 hours to do this whole thing, not even close to 15 but I suppose thats why they call it the stealership

I don't but its pretty self explanatory, start at the trunk and remove the plastic, then there will be a tab into the roof that needs to be pressed in on both sides. After that, you pretty much just have to pull at the pillars and remove the stuff that is bolted on liek coat hooks and such

The sunshade I received from genuineaudiparts.com doesn't match what came out of my car! The metal strips don't have the same slots to line up with the plastic caps (the plastic parts plug the aluminum bar and pull the metal spring steel in it's track)....Has anyone experienced this? My new headliner came with a small metal insert on the end of each spring steel roll through a hole that is sized differently than the one on my existing sunshade (the spring steel is where the sunshade is glued to the metal), and I can't get the grey plastic caps through the spring steel the same way my original does. Is there an updated plastic cap part? Help?

Audi Q5 sun shade / sunroof repair with pictures - replacement coming soon

Thanks for this, was super helpful.

I took a few pics to help others since I just removed the sunshade from my wifes 2009 Q5 that had fallen apart on one side, all the metal ribbing is bent up.

I need to figure out if I just need the shade, or the box/metal that came with it, I didn't get that removed, so may see if @mec is still around for this..

Here is a PDF with images of everything incase anyone else intends doing it. When I install the new one, I'll take more pics of the install.

You just need the shade. Metal box is reusable, though I struggled to find the shade without the box

wondering if I need the roller too, since that didn't come out unless it comes with the sunshade, the diagram since to indicate it all those parts..

Yeah if you look at 23 it's one piece. Or rather sold as one piece. The metal box, and then two caps and the fabric. The fabric rolls in on itself so there is no roller, the edges have steel strips that are rolled up.

If you can find the fabric by itself you might save some cash

    Hi Realien,

I was wondering if you were able to self repair. can you share your experience as well if you have faced any difficulty. I have 2010 Q5 and the shade came off. dealer quoting 2500+, planning to do self repair.

what part you have ordered from which website.

Do you have pictures from your repair.

    thanks

Well. I can get the back center cap off but i cannot for the life of me figure out how to get the side pillars off in order to drop down the back of the roof.

    So far Audi - 1. Me - 0

Anyone have some pictures or assitance with pulling the remaining pillars off so the back can just drop down?

Hi Mec, I hope you are still monitoring this post. I was able to loosen the headliner for the first step, but couldn't figure out how to release the two side pillars on the rear. Everything seemed connected below. How is that done?

And are these the coat hangers? I tried to pop those out with a flathead, but that didn't seem to work either. [IMG][/IMG]

I think if I can just get past the initial steps I'm good to go. Appreciate any response.

    Thanks, -Christy

Thanks for this. It really did help, nothing else online that was worth a crap!! Much appreciated. Now trying to figure out how to load it all back in the car :)

The coat hangers are easy. I couldn’t figure out how to remove the rear pillars, though, so I just worked with the limited room I got from unclipping the rear part of the headliner and pulling it down. I got it done and that’s what matters.
Anyway, the coat hangers - they’re held by a T-30 bolt.

I am having problem with the installation of new replacement sunshade. The securing arrangement and clips are different and do not slide well. Also I need to replace the cables. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

Investigated this for about a year and replaced mine yesterday. Bought the sunshade of eBay for $40 (aftermarket) and took me about 7 hours removing the headliner. Hardest parts were removing the grab handles. The plastic expander that makes the metal grip clip into the roof was a pain. The other was the plastic guides that slide in the track that the metal of the sunshade is attached to. The trick I can suggest is to remove the metal hook on the plastic guide and get it and the metal of the shade into the track. Then snap it into the guide and onto the guide tab. Happy to answer any Qs if you like.

I posted some pics of the grab handle expander and the sunshade guides in my gallery.

Id intended on removing the whole sunroof from the roof but once I removed the metal piece from the plastic tabs its really easy to fit the metal of the sunshade into the guide. So, never removed the sunroof. I did have to remove the rear glass section the roof though, but that comes out from the top, you need to remove that to have access. can't do it without removing that glass section.

The sunshade in my 2010 Q5 started to rip off on the right side some months ago, and it got worse over time. After studying the posts here, I ordered a new sunshade at eBay for USD 67. It came with the 2 plastic catches that connect the front aluminum profile of the sunshade to its drive. I did not need the sunshade housing, that was not damaged and did not need replacement. I was able to replace the sunshade last weekend.

The tricky part for me was to put the new sunshade back into the car because the metallic spring bands want to pull the shade back into its housing, and because with the new sunshade I got, the interface between the plastic catch and the sunshade had changed which makes it hard for repair. I found a way around both issues, and created a step by step instruction how to do the replacement. Unfortunately, I couldn't upload the document here.

I'm stuck at the point of getting the metal bands of the sunshade back into the track. The problem is that they don't come forward in-line with the track, they seem to come in at an angle, and want to pull off the track as the shade moves towards the front of the car. My guess is that the metal bands are not fed thru the end caps of the housing properly. I'm pretty sure they curled and shifted as I was putting the housing in.

So back to the drawing board. Do any of you know a way to secure the metal bands to the housing so they don't curl up and pop out of the end caps? Any suggestions would be great! Thanks.

Hi Resoom: Do you have detailed instructions and/or photos of what you did?

Hi Audiq5driver: Did you order the new sunshade because the old one was damaged? Mine has just come loose on driver side, but looks fine otherwise. Is it necessary to have a new one for the repair to work? I would love to see your instructions. Can you forward over email? Thx
