G2 Brake Calipers Paint - thoughts?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Talked to a fellow AZ member who told me he used G2 paint calipers and sourced the /RS4 stickers off ebay from an England seller. I am now thinking about doing the same thing since it's easy and will save some major $ (a vendor on here wants $1.2K for the job and claim they use 'special stickers' as they told me via pm). Below is the result with G2. Thoughts?

I personally would not use G2. It is a brush on system, and I cannot see that turning out well at all. Its a good option for oem textured calipers, but not yours. You need a proper spray on application. LOL at that quote. This is not that difficult. Contact RS Worx. They quoted me 1/3 of that. Or your local body shop could do this as well.

I would love to have RX Worx do it...but man...it's a paint to have someone remove it, leave the car at shop and ship the calipers off. Can't seem to find a good way to do this and G2 seemed like a good option...

i agree with mops. if u have the standard brakes on the a5 i would say sure go for it. since u have RS brakes, the finish is superior to the g2 caliper kit. not worth doing. i would get it done properly and have a shop do it, or leave it as is.

I would get a set of jack stands and remove your calipers. Most shop will do it for $500. Make sure they remove the pistons and seals. If they got some miles on them, have them put new ones in. Perfect time to flush your brake fluids too!

Concur with others, for RS brakes (which I believe are already painted/coated) I'd recommend a professional spray or powdercoat.

G2 brush on paint is a great option for bare oem calipers. Its easy to do on-car since its a brush-on application. The textured oem calipers do a good job of hiding the brush stokes. It actually turns out better than you'd expect.

I had my old P car calipers powder coated. I think it holds up better, but either way it's getting baked. So, pistons and seals will need to come out.

has anyone had to redo their RS brakes? i may need mine sand blasted and redone. iam debating powder coating vs paint. the main reason iam leaning towards painting is bc i dont want to have to replace the piston seals and powder coating requires disassembling the calipers whereas paiting them does not. Some shops say you can reuse the same seals back, but idk, even in a reputable shop things can go wrong, if brake fluid leaks bc one of the seals isnt 100% the acidity of the brake fluids will destroy my wheels etc etc.
I spoke to audi parts dept and they said the caliper re-build kits (the seals) come in kits. These kits are $340 per caliper!!! thats just crazy. so if something goes wrong i have to put up $340 per caliper to get new seals.

From everyones experience how do the paint hold up? iam not banging on the wheels and going rally racing, just regular driving ...should i anticipate issues with the paint? (G2 or other high heat compatible paints )

I just sprayed the rear caliper plates to match the Audi Ceramic gray/silver, a simple enough job to do but it's like any paint work, 90% of the finish is from the preparation you put in.

As for decals, well ordered from the UK company and a company in Slovenia, the quality between the two is night and day, the Slovenian ones are now in the bin, I'm surprised they spelt Audi correctly they were so poor, I can fully recommend you give '[email protected]' a shout, quality is superb, the decals look 100% authentic.
I put two layers of clear coat over the decals to seal them in so they should stay looking like new for a long time to come.

My wife and I did a brake overhaul on her Evo several years back. The stock Brembos were known to fade on those cars. After doing it, I'm honestly hesitant to ever do it again. It was a long, painstaking process, but it looked great when we were done. I think the worst part about the entire process was the cleaning and sanding. My fingers were raw after spending countless hours scrubbing and sanding those damn things.

    After:

The fresh decals came with the new Brembo slotted rotors we installed.

wow. that looks fresh! nice work!
i would really rather get my RS calipers sand blasted or sanded to remove the current two layers of paint of (which makes the chips that it has deep!) off and then have it repainted.
maybe when they sandblast i can have them not go too heavy on the area near the seals so not as to destroy them which is the whole reason i wanted to paint vs powdercoat at this point, so as not to need replacements of the seals

Careful sandblasting them, you will end up with a rough surface finish on aluminium. Just clean them up and give them a good rub down with wet & dry to remove the chips, etc. Build up the layers of paint until you've got the finish you like, let the paint cure, apply the decals, let them cure for 24hrs and apply a clear coat to seal them and prevent peeling.

I'm curious if any of you guys clear coat your calipers? When we did the Evo we used 4 or 5 layers of black enamel ceramic (high heat). We put the decals on, and then we did 4 layers of ceramic clear (high heat). Needless to say, we laid the paint in thick and proper to make sure we never had to bother with it again. I think we spent less than $30 on paint. The expensive part was the rotors and pads, obviously.
