Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Just wondering... Im gonna jump from stock to stage 2... What should I expect the labor charge to be for the install of the software and the pulley?

Thanks folks, just had a shop quote me $2570 (Tune, Parts, Labor, Tax) and I felt like that may be a bit excessive since the products themselves run $1850 retail direct from APR. Comes out to almost $200/hour labor even if it takes a full three hours...

I've always done all of my own work or worked alongside local tuners on previous projects and had to pay out here and there, but I've never seriously modded a $60k vehicle so I'm not entirely sure how this group operates... Am I expected to barter here? Or am I looking at an "It is what it is" situation?

It is what it is, apr set up the dealer network to benefit apr and dealers., not the customers.

Have you looked into other dealers? Buy the pulley from apr, install yourself and go to dealer to get the flash only done

To the OP it generally takes about 3 hours to install the pulley, at least on a B8 S4/S5 3.0T. Keep in mind the vehicle usually goes into the service position for the installation. And you would another 15-30 minutes to flash the ECU and clear any codes.

Well that's not exactly true. The APR dealer network benefits APR, APR dealer and APR customers. If there weren't any dealers you would have to ship your ECU to APR every time for upgrades and you wouldn't have a reliable source for tech, sales and service support for APR products. Also many APR dealers are trained in how to install APR parts properly.

I was expecting somewhere around $350 of labor when factoring everything together (About $2200 out the door).... Upping that total three or four hundred moves the cost/benefit scale down a little bit for me, I guess I will have to do a bit more contemplating as to whether the upgrade is worth it to me

If apr wanted to benefit their customers they would have a device that would allow flashing at home. The dealer network is their way around that.

FYI I can do a pulley install in less than 2 hours in my driveway so I'd hope a shop could do the same

Agreed about the dealer network. Feel free to ask swank his opinion there too lol.

I didn't do APR because of excessive price and I hated that stalk map switching. YMMV. Good luck OP.

Check out the apr pulley installation guide on ECS tuning, it's easier than you think (especially if you have done a grille replacement before - ie have an idea of how to remove the front bumper). You'll eventually need to get the ECU flashed (unless you ship it directly to APR, not easy with your b8 6MT ECU and security bolts), but you can source the pulley yourself, install it and show up at a shop. Place I went to didn't charge me any labor for the flash after I had the pulley on, said it was included with the initial stg 1/2 software. I believe I paid something like 1800 total and worked with some other helpful users to borrow a pulley removal tool for a nominal fee which pretty much covered shipping.

If you are hady, it really isnt hard to install the pulley itself. Plus you can drive around with the Stg II pulley without worrying about damaging your motor since the ecu will regulate how much boost your engine sees.

Or just wait until Waterfest, drive to NJ and get it installed for free on site (at least I heard they did that last year). That would be a little cheaper alternative and you get to go to a nice showing of cars as well.

Just got a much better estimate for the GIAC/AWE setup than I got the the APR setup and the driving time is about the same... Looks like I'm leaning toward them now

IMO, you can't go wrong either way, especially going from stock to stage 2. I went from stock to stage 2 with GIAC/AWE and it is absolutely incredible, however, I'm pretty confident I would be just as happy had I gone with APR. Good luck!

My local APR dealer (new dealer in town) quoted me.

Copy & pasted from my email:

    Part: MS100024 - Sale Price: $467.49 (Retail: $549.99)
    Part: MS100025 - Sale Price: $191.24 (Retail: $224.99)
Installation: $499.99 (we include a before & after dyno pull free of charge!) :)

Sounds like BS to me. They want to charge me for pulley installation kit as if I get to keep that kit for no reason + ~5hr labor...

At that price, I'd rather drive 1-2 hr to another APR dealership like Excelerate.

The pulley install ran about $500 in an expensive city market where minimum wage is $12.50. Labor rates run $140/hr.

fwiw the dealer network is for APR's benefit, not trying to screw the customer, but more about protecting their IP.

a lot easier to keep track of a few hundred shops vs a few thousand customers. if their software gets ripped, it would b easier to track where it's stemming from.
