    Intercooler Piping Keeps Blowing

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
For a little backstory, I have a CTS turbo FMIC that I installed around 6 months ago. I never had a problem with it up until I installed a K0R and/or had work done to the car and tuned. The reason for the and/or is because it didn't pop off right when I installed the K0R but I also wasn't pushing it because I was still on a Revo 2 tune. The work done to the car was: the cam, cam follower, hpfp, timing belt and oil pan replaced. So I can't say for sure if it was something the shop did or not but I never had the problem before.

As for the hose attached to the turbo outlet is the one that keeps popping off, I have pulled it apart and re positioned the piping multiple times but it still keeps coming off. Does anyone have any ideas on how to keep the pipe on?

    Sidenote:
I feel like it is also more difficult to line up the piping with the K0R then with the k03...

tighten it harder? A bit of hairspray always helps to make things sticky. Take some sandpaper and scruff up the turbo outlet to give the silicone some adhesion....not much you can do aside from that.

You could have an alumnium bend welded into the turbo so that it comes out already directed in the correct position

I have tightened it and gone through tons of hose clamps and fixing it on the side of the road. I was contemplating welding a bracket to keep it all in place but I would rather not. I will give the hairspray a try and if it doesn't work get some new piping.

    Thanks for the input

Yeah, I was going to suggest hair spray also. I blew my intercooler piping off like 3 times. Found that one of the clamps that I thought was good, was actually a little too big, and it wasn't tight enough when it war completely tightened.

T-Bolt clamps are the only way to go and that's what comes with the CTS kit. My guess is that whatever shop you took it to didn't tighten the t-bolt enough the first time.
Martin is 100% correct. Scuff the outlet, wipe the silicone down with Isopropyl, allow it to dry and then spray some hair spray on it. I myself prefer Aquanet for such jobs cause it's cheap and has a Loctite-like hold.

Hmm makes sense. I'll have to check out aquanet. Every now and then usually after dismantling part of the intercooler system one of my coupler blows off. Nothing huge just a bit annoying, might be worth the effort to check out

OP, always remember, if you blow an IC hose, you can still limp home by unplugging the MAF. saved my ass a couple times.

Never thought about that good to know but hopefully I wont have to worry about this any more.

I am gonna pull it apart and today and do the hairspray and scuff up the connection. Give it some time to dry then give it a whirl and hope all goes well.

Unfortunately the original Tbolt clamp is long gone, I will have to order one.

You're not going to be able to hold 25+psi with a regular worm-gear clamp.

Pretty sure I ended up using a worm gear, and it held.
