Cool S4 vs 996 TT (unexpected results!!!)

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
To benchmark the new S4 (stock) I decided to play round this weekend against my brother-in-laws Porsche 996TT. His car is far from stock, 550HP tune, exhaust, and hybrid turbo's from Ultimate Motorwerks, etc. This thing is a BEAST, having driven several times I knew it might be pointless, but what the hell. We took both sleds out and made a few quick runs, first one being tandem romp from the on-ramp to freeway...

Run #1 - Directly behind, both cars accelerate at same time and he immediately gains 1.5 car lengths in front (torque swell heaven). To much of our amazement and as we began to reach unmentionable speeds, the S4 would not give up anymore than 2 car lengths in between... WOW! Pulled up beside and he tells me the TT was pegged. Time for heads up race... this is getting good.

Run#2 - Side by Side, from 3rd gear at 60+ mph we go (which by the way, is like getting hit by a Mack truck from behind when stomping his TT in 3rd). Torque swell pushes his car instantly out 2 cars lengths and again the same distance is kept up by S4 to unmentionable speeds. This is crazy, but I'm loving it!

Run#3 - Side by Side, from roll in 3rd again, both cars hot with little cool down time in between, we go again from 40mph and I gain a slight jump in the first 2 seconds but his turbo lag is quickly overcome and propels him out to 2.5 car lengths in front. From there it was apparent the S4 might be loosing some ponies due to heat or inefficient intercooler. In all, not bad for heads up stock S4 vs. heavily modified 911TT. Am very impressed and so was my brother-in-law who really loved the car!

For now, going to enjoy the stock performance and keep the warranty active, but once it hits 50K miles, am planning to go Stage II APR and bring the heat on his 996!

    Cheers!

    Nice. Although a 550+hp 911 shouldn't be that close.

With stage 2 you could close that gap. Life's to short to stay stock. Just sayin'.

My Stage 2 S4 on C16 with bolt ons went heads up with my cousins Tune only 997TT, although I'm a better driver.

    IIRC I ran 9.6 60-130 to his 9.1

OP, if that 996TT really has upgraded turbos, and your brother in law can drive worth a shit then something is wrong with his car. A stage 2 S4 would have a hard time with a well driven stock 996TT let alone one with a turbo upgrade.

Tune/Exhaust 996TT X50 (GT2 Turbos) on pump gas go high 11.6-11.9@117-120 in the 1/4. Basically a Stage 2 car on race gas

I did [email protected] at Atco a few months ago in my 6 speed S4 with bolt ons.

No way in the world a stock S4 can keep up with a stock 996TT however i do beleive a B8 can put up a nice fight against a mildly modded 996TT with Stage 2 and bolt ons.

pump gas vs. race gas? lol

At least make it Apples to Apples.

The point is a 996TT with a turbo upgrade should lay waste to ANY B8 S4. Even your stage 2 car on race gas.

99 times out 100, it's the driver....or lack thereof!!LOL!!! I raced a Z06 corvette (2010 or 2011 I'm guessing) with my stock 2014 S4 (just lighter wheels and tires and EuroCode intake) and twice left him from a dead stop! It wasn't even close!! I thought it was a regular Vette and I looked over and saw the Z06 badges and my wife said is that not good? I said "nope....I'm getting ready to have my ass handed to me"!! But of course, he couldn't drive and sat there and did nothing but spin his tires!! But after being 8-10 car lengths a head of him I tapped my brakes and that was it!!

If it had been an even moderate driver, it would have been over immediately!! Actually, he probably wouldn't have even bothered!! It was still fun for 8-10 lengths!!LOL!!!

Definitely nothing wrong with his car or driving skills, I can assure you. His car is tuned, but not at the "raged edge". Also, the S4 throw/shifting is shorter and much quicker than the 996TT, but main difference I see are torque curves. His delivers massive amounts of torque and then gently falls where the S4 is linear and what I believe keeps his 996TT in check.

Again, not saying these two cars are equal here, just simply baselining our S4's performance with a modded 911TT. The "lay waste" thing just did not happen...

I know someone who traded an 996TT for an S4 when he wanted a more reliable commuter. It's not that the S4 is the fastest, but it's the fastest repeatably.

You sure it wasn't an Aventador? bc the S4 is way more of a reliable commuter than any lambo.

A 996TT is pretty inexpensive. You can pick them up for well under $50k, 2004 or earlier. Maintenance is the expensive part.

I have a stock 2014 S4 with DSG as well as a 2001 996 turbo 6 speed with a few mods (exhaust, K16 billet turbos installed several weeks ago, tune, 5 bar fuel pressure regulator, & a few other odds and ends). I love my S4 which is a blast to drive and my daily driver. That said, my 996T is in another league, not by just power but in handling around the twisties. I believe the HP is 500 at the wheels as the tune is mild to help protect my stock clutch. Flooring it in 2nd gear on a smooth and relative straight road is a blast! The Michelin Pilot sports stick like glue with no wheelspin if you are easy on the clutch. After letting out the clutch and going WOT in 2nd gear at about 15 mph, it will reach redline at 7000 rpm and about 70 mph in around 2 seconds. However, the parts and labor are too expensive for me to use as a daily driver. This is with me doing most of the labor (other than clutch replacement or other major stuff).

The stock S4 does not even compete with the Stock 996 TT, let alone a tuned one.

Both are fun cars, but not even close in performance.

I stayed ahead of a 335 with a 700hp Vishnu ST setup on it from 50-1xx MPH, what do I win for that? (He never passed me... we were both surprised. lol)

For the naysayers, the side by side 60-125mph run had the TT ahead by 2 car lengths until we backed off. I'll leave it at that and have video for next time given this thread is beat to death.

Are you sure it wasn't 1700HP? As long as we're making up numbers, why not? 335bugattiDrive335xi.
