    Lug Bolts for aftermarket wheels

Ok - first can anyone confirm what the exact dims are for the stock OEM wheel lug bolts on the post-facelift S5 (if that males any difference)?
    Are they 14x1.5 R14 ball seat 17mm hex with 27mm shank ?

If so, the OEM ones fitted are the open top type but I want to get the closed/solid type. The problem is that the 20" Niche Targa wheels are about 3mm thicker than the 18" stock wheels and so I don't get the same amount of rotations to torque the bolts fully. Now 3mm may not be much but I'm hoping I can get some longer shanks and was wondering what size would be suitable?

Assuming the OEM are 27mm shamks and I need another 2/3mm (= 29/30mm), and if I can only get 32mm long shanks, will that be an issue? Do shanks that are a couple or so millimeters longer make any difference eg will they bind?

Yes. The stock bolts are 27mm ball seat as listed above.

For after market wheels you need cone seat bolts. The OEM bolts are ball seat. That is likely why they aren't giving you enough rotations. You shouldn't need cone seat bolts longer than 27mm unless you're running spacers.

I've run bolts that are ~2-3mm longer than needed with no issue. Here are 30mm's....

not all ball seat bolts are the same. be careful not to confuse the ball seat radius with the diameter of the bolt. for B8's the ball seat radius is 13mm or R13, not R14.

According to the guys that put the wheels and tires on, the Niche Targas require ball seat ? I didn't see them myself so I'll take a lug bolt off this weekend to check. PS - I'm not running spacers.

I was under the impression they were R14 (ie 14mm radius) - hence why I highlighted it - does your comment also apply to the B8.5 ?

yes my comment applies to B8.5. achtuning has a nice summary. the fact that that OEM Q5 wheels uses R14 was news to me.

    http://shop.achtuning.com/hartmann-1...-for-audi.aspx

"All Audi vehicles using a 5x112 or 5x100 bolt pattern use a 14mm diameter bolt with a 1.5 thread pitch. OEM Audi wheels (Q5 and Q7 excluded) use an R13 ball seat bolt, Q5 and Q7 use an R14 ball seat bolt, aftermarket wheels may use a ball seat (rounded) or cone seat (tapered) style bolt depending on the manufacturing. If purchasing bolts for use with spacers add the spacer thickness to the original bolt length to find the optimal length (15mm spacer plus an original bolt length of 28mm would be 15+28=43 for a recommended 43mm length).

R12 and R13 refers to the radius of the ball as measured in millimeters. R12 indicates a ball radius of 12mm, R13 indicates a ball radius of 13mm, R14 indicates a ball radius of 14mm. Hartmann R13 bolts feature a 2-piece design with a moving washer (seat) which enables the bolt to be fastened with a more accurate torque measurement and holds the torque to specification for a longer period vs. a single piece bolt."

I've contacted 3 different places as well as went to my dealer and none could tell me they're R13.
Thanks Bro - that's why I love this forum.

All factory lugs are 14x1.5 27mm R13 ball seat. Factory lugs come in two style one piece or two piece.

    Bolt 1, 3, & 4 are 1piece. Bolt #2 is a 2piece.

Most aftermarket wheels use a conical seat bolt, however some use R12 or R13 ball seats. With aftermarket wheels, there is no industry standard, so you have to check with the wheel manufacturer with what they recommend.

Conical seats are popular for aftermarket wheels since the bolts are much more common, and easier to obtain. Lots of Audi/VW specific wheels, like VMR's for example, will reuse factory bolts, since they're designed specifically for Audi and VW's. Most generic aftermarket wheels, BBS, Enkei for example will be conical seats. Double check with the wheel manufacturer.
