    Oil filter compatibility

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So as far as I understand, there are two versions of the oil filters for the 1.8T, the standard filter and a larger version of the standard filer. Apparently both filters are compatible with the engine. I've been doing my own oil changes for 6 years with the standard oil filter without any issues. This time though, I ordered the larger filter and could not get it to fit. The opening on the filer was larger and would not screw onto the engine. What gives? I had a similar issue a few years back when I mistakenly bought a Mobile 1 M1-303 filter instead of the M1-301 filter. The M1-303 version looked exaclty the same as this larger version and I had the same issue with it. The guy in this DIY is using the larger filter that Im having issues with and doesnt have any issues. So what am I doing wrong?

P.S. I feel like an idiot asking this question, this feels so trivial.

What is the part number of the filter that doesnt fit? I know my b6 a4 wont fit a napa 1333 , but they will fit my passat, due to the length.

Its a MANN oil filter and the part number listed on the box is W940/25.

Yup, the pitch is the distance from peak to peak.

I've used the huge Mobil filter before. I think it cross links to a big American V8 engine

The MANN W940/25 is the correct filter for the 1.8T, and has a 3/4"- 16 tpi pitch thread, according to the MANN oil filter catalog. Make sure the threads on the oil filter mounting flange base are not stripped causing the filter to not tighten up.

I had an OEM Audi fiter once which could not thread onto the filter mount on the car....

While "rare" it is possible the threads on the filter can get damaged or were not properly formed when the filter was manufactured...

Only happened to me once in 30 + years of changing my own filters!

Closer examination on the threads should reveal the problem...which will be the threads are wrong or not correctly formed
To allow the filter to thread onto the protruding pipe end on the car.

Easy fix....get another filter. However no one expects not to be able the thread on the "new" filter and generally dont carry spares.

Or the threaded pipe end on the car has damaged threads....

The "starter" thread is usually the issue....

Wonder why. I use the 1333 on mine and it fits by a mile. It's longer than a Mann 940/25. I was thinking about ordering a few Mann 940/4 which are even bigger than the 1333.

The threads are fine and I never had any issues with them. On all my oil changes the filter smoothly glided on the threads without any resistance until it was fully mounted. The issue isnt with the filter tightening up but rather the opening on the filter is larger than the piece that sticks out on the oil filter mounting flange. The opening on the filter itself seemed so large that I could push the filter up on the mounting flange without the sides touching the piece that proturdes out from the mounting flange. Its not an issue with it not threading on or not tightening on. Does that make sense?

Yes, the car is front wheel drive. Did the FWD varaiants of the A4 differ in respect to the mounting flange?

I can't imagine they would be different. The FWD just has less room for the longer filters due to the transverse mounted engine.

If it's a 940/25, it has to be defective or improperly labeled. Measure the hole in the filter, if it's bigger that 3/4 of an inch, then it's not a 940/25

No mines a quattro, the filter hits the engine mount ,when trying to screw it in, so i used a mann 940/25 if i remember correctly.

The filter mount flanges are the same, because both engines are AMB specification code. Also, AMB = longitudinal orientation. The AMB has no transverse installation orientation.

Link does not state the THREAD (is it really "1.8T, and has a 3/4"- 16 tpi pitch thread" considering metric car?)
