    OEM Golf R K04 Turbo in B7 A4

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So a buddy of mine is offering up his K04 from his Golf R, practically new for an unfathomably cheap price. I know that K04s for our cars are modified on the outlet leading to the intercooler. What I'm wondering is if the turbo would actually bolt up to the engine. I'm assuming it would since they both share the FSI engine, I'd just need some custom piping to get it to my FMIC, which wouldn't really be too big of a problem. Thoughts? Should I attempt this project?

I think there is a difference in the way it bolts up in comparison to a transverse vs. longitudinal motor, so I don't think it will since the Golf R is transverse and we're longitudinal. I'm not an expert in the subject, but I think I remember reading this somewhere.

Yeah I knew the two were different, but I always thought it had to do with the actual positioning of the engine block itself. And then the outlet on the cold side of the turbo is modified to go straight down vs. horizontally like on the GTI/Golf R. Bolt pattern actually seems to look identical on the manifold, if I compare a pic of the OEM k03 on our car vs the OEM k04 from the golf r. Hmmm...

If it bolted up them yeah, you'd just have to clock the cold side to mate up with everything. I remember seeing someone trying to sell the APR K04 kit a while back and he stated "I bought it from someone and it isn't directly bolting up to my car"... Turns out they (all the B7 guru's lol) found out that it was for the transverse platform I believe. That's why I said I'm not an expert but remember seeing someone having problems with the manifold mating up. Hopefully someone with a little more knowledge in the subject can chime in.

Yeah, I wonder if they may have been referring to the outlet, but who knows. I'm no champion mechanic myself, but my OEM K03 is getting a bit tired, and the opportunity to get a practically new K04 for less than half of what a new K03 costs is very intriguing. I'll scope it out a bit and see if it would work. So long as the exhaust manifold bolts up, I dont see any probelms. I mostly gotta see if the turbo would fit in that area since it's designed a bit differently

Cool thanks for the link. I wonder if the issues that guy ran into was because he was trying to install it on a B8 A5. Not familiar with those cars at all and their engine lay out :/

You could pick up the turbo and sell it to a VW or A3 2.0L guy for a profit to help fund your B7 2.0t K-04 build.

Mec knows what it takes I believe there is some grinding to the manifold and you need to custom setup the vacuum lines. You could also send it in to a place and have the internals swapped to your K03. They would also machine the compressor housing to fit the K04 compressor wheel. gpopshop.com

This is definitely doable. There is a DIY thread around here somewhere, Mec had posted it. If its a great price I say jump on it. Worst case you just resell it and recoup costs!

Im only teasing, probably gonna go the unitronic route for it, unless JHM has plans on writing a K04 tune. It's gonna be a bit of time before this gets installed since I'll have to fabricate an outlet to the FMIC and pick up some injectors, but I REALLY want to make this happen

Looks like the exhaust port on the turbo where my test pipe would go might need to be modified a bit too. I think that would be the biggest hurdle to get over but still looks doable

Yeah that's what it looks like. Looks like the bottom 2 holes just need to be drilled inward a bit more which should not be an issue:

I'm probably gonna be sitting on it for a couple months, but it's REALLY hard to pass up a practically new K04 for that price.

Make a DIY of the process showing what steps you had to do to make it work. I am sure a lot of people would enjoy it, specially with the amount of Golf R guys upgrading to bigger turbos there should be a good amount of these floating around. It would make a good relatively low cost turbo option.

Definitely will do. From the research I've done, the K03 and K04 between the two cars are pretty much identical. It looks like I'll just have to make 2 holes on the exhaust flange and then get the outlet hooked up to my FMIC. But yeah, im totally with you. I've seen lots of used ones go for less than $1k. Would be a great alternative considering how expensive it is to K04 our cars vs. the GTI. Makes me a sad panda :(

Haha yeah! In the mean time, pick up a k03 and a k04 turbo to downpipe gasket so you can see the exact differences between the two. For the outlet you can easily make that work with some silicon hoses or even just cut it off and weld some pipe to it like CTS does.

Yeah the S3 and Golf R use the same turbo, but to get a K04 modified for our plaform, the turbo needs to be tweaked a bit. My buddy works at a machine shop, I'll have no problem getting the holes on the exhaust flange drilled and trimmed. Then all that's left is the outlet to the FMIC, which I'm sure I can easily find piping for or get it made, or even scilicone

Yea you will definitely want to setup the external DV relocation. I believe ATP sells the adapter.

Dont the OEM Golf R K04s have a spot for the DV on them though already?

Not sure, I know the S3 K04 does not. Have your friend send you a pic?
