    clutch master cylinder replacement... questions

    My B5 A4 had a failure in the clutch system (lost pedal pressure and ability to shift) last week. Shop says it's the clutch master cylinder. Some questions for the experts out there...
    -is the clutch master cylinder the same as the clutch slave cylinder? (i assume so).
    -if they are different, any reason to replace the two together? (Is the labor to replace the slave part of the labor to replace the master?)
    -quote was $560 parts and labor. Reasonable? (I assume this gets me a 'free' brake fluid flush also).

    They're different. Master is on the pedal side, slave is on the tranny side.

    No need to replace if isn't broken. Unless you can get the slave cheap and labor is included in the price.

    The price seems high. The part should be $100-150 or so. It is tricky to get at. I would think 2-3 hours would be fair. You probably will not get all new brake fluid. But you will get all new fluid in the clutch bits because they will have to bleed it.

    Often an old/worn slave cylinder will begin to squeak during operation once you put brandy-new fluid in it. Once in a while, the shock of new fluid (and more-so losing all of the old sludgy fluid) will cause a master or slave to fail rapidly. So there is some possibility that you will want or need to replace the slave at some point after this service. Not a definite thing by any means, but possible.
