Are you wanting to update the MMI firmware, navigation maps or both? Either way only the dealer can update your software because they must request activation for once loaded.

Actually you don't need the dealer to update either. Just last week I updated the maps, and to update the MMI, follow this guide. http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...=1#post6937606

How Can I Update My Audi MMI Software?

The 2010 and 2011 model years have the MMI 3G and cannot update maps via CD. It comes on a dealer ordered SD card and must be installed and activated by them in order to use.

    Hi Phillip,

Sorry to highjack the thread, but I've been trying to catch up to Audi universe but it is a bit overwhelming. You seem to know what is going on with these cars so I would like to pick your brains and ask you if any updates are available to my system, 2007 A6:

Hardware is stock, with a CD Changer + Nav CD in the trunk.

On another note, what would be the easiest way to expand Media Player capabilities? I purchased the car last saturday and assumed either Bluetooth Phone via AD2P or SD/USB with MP3 would be standard... Arghhh!

    Thanks in advance!

    Hi BB,

You have the so called MMI 2G HIGH:

You have latest MMI 2G 46.1.0 software so no need for update...

In terms of navigation databse (maps): you have Navigation DVD Drive in trunk (not CD drive as you mentioned) containing the maps DVD: you can eject the DVD and check the part number or map version (if the DVD is genuine)

If you can't eject the DVD - your eject button is disabled (it can happen: AUDI doesn't want you to replace DVD media yourself but buy from AUDI...): here you will need a friend with VAG-COM (VCDS) or ask nicely a dealer to activate the eject button,

If you have DVD media which is a "backup copy" and you can't actually see what is written on it - you should go to map info and check the "Databank version" which includes the date of database in "AHXXX/YYYYMMMDDDHHMMSS" format)

latest database version looks like this: (Yes yes -no mistype here: latest 2015 DVD has database which is timestamped as 16 DEC 2013...:)

Latest Navigation DVD of 2015 maps for you MMI is Part Number: 4E0 060 884 DS, (Databank version AH341/20131216184237). Below the latest DVD and how it looks:

Hope this clears it out a bit... :)

    Phillip,

This is great, thanks a ton! I have the DVD Cover, it says 2010 so I assume it is the genuine... I'll try to eject it later on tonight and see what happens.

Regarding the latest DVD, Part Number: 4E0 060 884 DS, is this only a basemap update or actual interface upgrade? For instance, I feel like the stock navigation in 2D format is very old and not intuitive, if I were to upgrade the DVD, would that be new as well or just the map itself?

And last question, where/how much these DVD go for?

Thanks again, it sure helped a lot!

    Hi BB,

You definitely have a 2G High and to expand your Media Player capability you essentially have 3 options:

1 - AMI - parts can be found via ebay relatively easily and added to your MMI with a loop
2 - Dension 500 - a plug and play functionality which allows for the same things as an AMI
3 - Xcarlink - another option, but also can allow for video feed

To add BT streaming of music, you'll need a good A2DP, I've used Tune2Air and it works flawlessly with my Dension 500, which also can take USB.

The update will simply present newer maps, POIs, and Search results. The look and feel remain the same as what you have. Also, 2D is what we are stuck with here in north America. You will essentially go from 2010 maps to 2014 maps.

Thanks for the clarification... I wonder if most users eventually get used to the Nav interface or if they jump to external GPS units...

Thanks for the summary. I did some of my homework around the options and this is what I think I have learned:

    1. It seems like this would be used, no new parts on the market? And if I understood this correctly, I would need to buy used parts from MMI AMI 3G cars? Price range around $450 and I would need to replace the CD changer with the new AMI?

    2. New/used parts on the market. Their website lists nultiple options for my car, although not clear what the differences are. Approximately $500 to $600 solution.

    3. Xlink USA website was down yesterday? Weird.

    Did I get this right?

    BB,

Sundance is the go to guy for Nav. update DVD if needed. I will vouch for him.

The loop he mentions is called "MOST" and its a fiber optic loop that ties all the MMI goodies together. It's a little confusing at first but from experience I can say its not that hard to understand. Remember what I suggested, visit "you tube" and watch a few video's here is a good one to get started, it's a 5 part series http://enfigcarstereo.com/shopsite_s...I_A6_R_05.html
scroll about halfway down the page and you will see the 5 videos. This one opened my eyes to the "MOST RING"
    Good Luck

You have it all basically right.

For the AMI you will need the following:
the unit : Part no 4E0057785F
    CD removal tool : 4D0051530
    ipod connector cable : 4F0051510L
If you are removing CD changer in the glovebox and replacing with AMI, you shouldn't need anything else. Just unplug CD changer and plug in AMI. If you are keeping CD and adding AMI next to it, you will need power wiring harness #4F0051592A and fiber optic adapter #4E0972645. These are basically splitters that you plug into back of CD and AMI together then they plug into car. These can be found on ebay and such for as cheap as $250 or so.

If you go with the Dension 500, make sure it's the correct one - GW51MO2. They sometimes can be had for under $350

For Xcarlink, here is the one others have used: http://www.xcarlink.co.uk/product.ph...8&cat=4&page=1

Good luck and as RJB linked to, the enfig install vids are EXCELLENT tutorials.

Lastly, RGB appreciate the props :)

    Great link RJB, thanks!

And yes, definitely very confusing! I am coming from a Maxima with 2Din DVD Player with Bose, very straight forward and open source... So all of this seems to fall on the complex side of the spectrum... But I am getting there!

    Cheers,

BB, think of the MOST as a ring that requires a loop to ensure all the systems work as per design. If you add or remove items from the ring, you need to close or open connections to allow them to be part of the ring/loop. The system is not 'smart' enough to recognize when a system does not exist or a new system enters (i.e. Dension), hence why you need to connect everything to and from the MOST.

Don't worry, these things tend to make more sense, but honestly the VAG cars are quite different from Nissan's and Japanese ilk.

It sounds more line SCSI networking back in the days! This has been very clarifying, just wish there were something more affordable to add a USB to the MMI.... every option I am coming across starts at $500+ just to get some sort of Media extension...

    Hi Phil,
Will the latest update reinstate Sirius Satellite Radio? I'm still on the 2010 original software.
    Thanks

OK cool. Did you use a charger on your battery while doing the updates? About how long did it take to do both updates?

    Thanks

Yes I had a charger connected. I did leave the ignition on the whole time by mistake though. It took about 3 hours to do the navigation update with minimal supervision at the beginning and end. I don't recall how long exactly it took for the MMI software update, I did that a few months ago. I'm gonna say it was less than one hour, but Philip will be able to tell you that.

    Hi,

MMI upgrade is time consuming: Software upgrade: 30 minutes. Map uploading 2.5 Hours(!), Activation 5 minutes...

Regarding the battery charger: its not needed for the update steps because there is no need to keep the key in ignition ON state or car turned on....

use the KEYFOB (EVEN if you HAVE key-less entry):

First switch off the car so nothing works (you can lock the car and then unlock it so you come to initial state):

Insert the KEYFOB into the switch but DO NOT turn it / press it to ignition position! (The KEYFOB itself - no need to remove the actual key or something)

This way MMI will turn on but all other car aspects will be still off - no ignition 2 state... and this is exactly what we need: only MMI on...

and MMI will not shut off by itself after 15 minutes like it generally does if you leave car like this - because it will be in "Engineering mode"...
